Hi, anyone know why an AF 747-400 (F-GEXA) was at EWR on 12/31/99? Usually I see 777s, 340s, and 742/741s at EWR, but I've never seen a 744. Also, since this was a day when not many people were flying, why send your largest aircraft? Was it some sort of special trip, as I saw no one at the gate. According to the gate, it was scheduled for departure at 6:30 for CDG. Thanks for any info!

Sammy

Hi Sammy!

Air France cancelled a lot of flights on 12/31/99,and they maintained just one flight from Paris to NYC wich was operated with a b747-400. I think that they decided to operate the 744 because it it was adapted to the forecasts for this day.

A b747-400 is always less big than 4 or 5 flights operated with smaller planes...

Hey Louis, do you know if they also came to JFK on 12/31, and not just EWR? Thanks.

Sammy

Hi Sammy,

This B747-400 was the only Air France flight from Paris to NYC (EWR and JFK). All the others were cancelled.

Regards

Louis

PS : Did you know that the 747-400 you saw (G-GEXA) was an ex UTA???

Hey Louis, to be quite honest when I saw the plane I said to myself, Hmm wonder if this is an ex UTA plane, I bet it is, when I got home and checked the reg. I found it to be true. It was quite facinating just sitting there looking at the plane, the 747 (especially the -400) always facinates me, and I love the fact that when people walk by they say "Thats one big plane!" And at EWR, in Terminal C, if it wasnt for the glass you could reach out and touch it! Plus, even though AF has an Eurowhite scheme, it looks good with it. In any event, I was thrilled to see it there at my hometown airport   Thanks again for the info!

Sammy

P.S. This was also the aircraft that carried the World Cup titles with the picture of the soccer player on the side.

Which Air France flights were cancelled?
They fly to Boston, New York, Washington, Atlanta, Miami, Houston, Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, and Toronto, Montréal, and I think Vancouver???

So out of these daily flights which should have totalled around 20 or more flights on a regular day, how many were operated on this reduced schedule.

LH423

P.S. There were approximately 50 planes in European skies, when the clock ticked midnight in W. Europe (exc UK and Portugal).
