The NW A320's will be based in NRT for the inter Asia flying. NW will not operate any US-Japan flights with the A320's. The aircraft will be ferried to Japan empty prior to commencement of service.

ETOPS doesn't apply for ferry flights. It only applies to Part 121 flights. This is how light aircraft and business jets can fly to many of their destinations, don't have to worry about ETOPS restrictions, can go more direct.

Flying via Alaska from, say, SEA to NRT is 5000 miles, vs 8000 miles from California via Hawaii and Guam.
SEA-OME-NRT has 2000 and 3000 mile legs, not too challenging for an A320 ferry flight.

There are lots of Airbus deliveries right now for NW and probably more to come as fleet replacement planes come into effect in the next few years. They still are recieving A319's every two weeks and in 2003 the first of 23 A330's will arrive.
It would be simple to fly a A320 to NRT, simply put ferry tanks in the cabin and its range is extended by thousands of miles. That how hawian got thier 717's. Maybe they will do that.
