What Happened To Anchorage?

Several years ago I flew directly from London to Anchorage on the 742 with BA.

Why did BA suspend the route?
Did the route continue to any other destinations?
How often did it operate?
When was it suspended?

Also, what other airlines flew from Europe to ANC?
Did those airlines continue to any other destinations or stop on the way?

Everyone flew to Anchorage years ago. Sabena, Air France, KLM, SAS, Lufthansa, British Airways, JAL, ANA, Korean, CX, etc...There was a time when flying over the (in those days Soviet Union) was forbidden. The shortest way to the orient from Europe was over the pole circle, which required a refueling stop in Anchorage, both east and west-bound. The flights to Anchorage (from Europe) were roughly 9 hours and then another 6 to (for example) Tokyo.
Today the flights are non-stop to except for mainly cargo flights, which continue to operate.

Back in the early 90'ties, I think, I flew with a SAS DC-10-30 to ANC and then NRT and back again. On the way home from ANC I flew on the jumpseat.

I imagine the airport was quite busy then, I imagine it has a large number of unused gates now, does it seem strangely large now?

With the advent of longer range aircraft, many airlines no longer need ANC as a fuel stop.

Due to all the increased security checks posing potential long delays, CX now route their YYZ-HKG secotrs through YVR and not ANC.

A combination of the 747-400 and the Soviet Union opening their airspace prettymuch killed off most of the passenger traffic years ago.

Now what is left is leaving because of the irrational security rules that have been put in place since sept 11.

We get a lot of freighter traffic still though.



OBAMA-WORST PRESIDENT EVER....Even SKOORB would be better.
