Ford Plant At CLE To Shut Down?

Is this what we've all hoped and dreamed for coming true? I heard that Ford is planning on closing it's Brookpark plant in 2003 or 2004... has CLE made the first good move ever and bought the plant to remove it for expansion of CLE or is this just non-related. I can only hope but in the mean time I'd like to hear your thoughts!

I think I heard somewhere that they were restructioring their business. They are most likely closing it because they don't see it as profitable. But if your speculation is right, that would be GREAT news.

What a ridiculous statement. I work at CLE, and would love to have a better airport, but not this way. Besides, check your info., if I'm not mistaken they're only shutting the aluminum casting plant which is a division within the Brook Park plant. What is this "we" bullcorn? If I'm a part of "we," then let it be said that I would never hope or dream for anyone to be laid off.

Do not think that people losing their jobs is GREAT news just so you can go watch some 757s instead of 737s. Think of our hometown and its economy. This plus the LTV shutdown are very dire events locally. Your plane spotting desires are of much less importance than people's livlihood.

Hey guess what... I'n not thinking about spotting. If we get improvments then the city gets a whole crapload of money! It will create jobs too such as construction workers or masons, architects etc. Also in case you didn't realize "our" town sucks and if they are closing the plant ANYWAY we might as well hope for the best. I never said "Hey cool lets kick out a buncha employees and take their jobs and throw them away just so "we" can see one 757 a day!" Lighten up... i know how everyone feels... two of my family members used to be CLE CO employees but are now jobless so shut your cakehole.

I heard.... and remember this could only be rumor... that the new mayor is looking for a real professional to run the airport. I don't think anyone is lined up yet, though.

This is the wrong forum for this, but the cutbacks, on the microeconmic level, aren't good. However, on the macroeconomic level, it will help the US economy which is the first step to helping the local economy.

You two are completely off base. Robbing Peter to pay Paul is not the way to solve problems in this town. The Ford plant is a huge economic presence on the west side. The Berea City Schools get so much tax money from that place that it would be devistating to not only Brookpark, but to Berea and Middleburg Heights as well. As far as putting words in your mouth, what the hell else reason could you be happy about then? What joy do you get in this plant closing? I am all too aware about how the airport's inadequate design coupled with mismanagement has put is in a real dilemma. However, this is not a giant white elephant like the IX Center pissing contest, this is a crucial piece of the city. Besides, how would the airport end up with the land anyway? If you think the IX Center debate was memorable, this one would top it by a long shot. I am an airline employee at CLE, and I would love it if we had a real airport. But, I am also a lifetime west sider, and this is not a good thing. Finally, you should also realize that when you make a post which may encourage differing views, responding with "shut your cakehole" is not a counterpoint supporting your view. Or don't you have a view....mason jobs? Puuhhhhhlleeeeze

No offense, but I don't remember anybody helping out when Ford's Vermillion plant sent some workers down to Kentucky a few years ago...

Cleveland is more than Parma and Berea. The metropolitan area stretches from Sandusky to Canton and east to Painesville, almost to Erie.

Sooner or later you are going to have to add infastructure to keep up with the population. Either that or tell the west side to drive to DTW.

It was the Lorain plant that sent the workers to KY. Again, read my take....I am not narrow minded about this (with the exception of the "shut your cakehole" part). Cleveland's airport is garbage, and until big changes occur, it will remain garbage. BUT, rejoicing at a large amount of layoffs for any reason is horsesh*t. This city is in dire trouble, and this will not help in any way, shape, or form. This will cause problems all the way from Sandusky to Ashtabula, Lakewood to New Philly....not just Parma and Brookpark. Why these guys are so happy is beyond me. Tell you what, these guys should come on over to the UAW Hall and tell the boys how this is a good thing. Tell it to their families. Tell it to the worker with a high school education and 20 years with the company. Tell it to the school districts who count on the tax money. Tell it to the cities who staff their safety departments with tax money. Our city did a bullsh*t job keeping up with the times and now we're paying for it. When other cities went hi-tech, ours stayed industrial. Another nail in our coffin is not a cause for happiness.

I am from Cleveland and realize how bad the economy and the airport situation is. It is no secret that the blue collar industry is struggling in Cleveland with the closing of LTV steel, this, and another Ford plant in Lorain outside of Cleveland that was shut down a few years back. The problem with the airport is a huge reason why new companies don't come to Cleveland. If the plant is closing and the airport can be expanded it would mean so much more to those that work there and the rest of us. The airport is a huge reaon why the econom in Cleveland is so bad right now and if things don't improve along with the schools, infrastructure etc... More companies in the area will close their operations and move elsewhere hurting the economy more.

It's across the street from Vermillion.

Our city did a bullsh*t job keeping up with the times and now we're paying for it. When other cities went hi-tech, ours stayed industrial.

That is so true.

Everyone just sat on the sidelines while other cities tried to lead the way.

I think Mike White did a decent job with the city. Helping the sports teams, the Rock Hall, etc..

Now we need to get the schools up to par, and bring in more businesses (and not just steel companies).

Did you know that the new mayor doesn't even send her kids to Cleveland Public Schools?

If you bring the schools up, health care up, and crime down, you are going to see a lot more businesses setting up shop here.

Yes, enough with trying to lure in blue collar workers. Our economy is too dependent on factories, etc..

Those factories run on cycles and when they go bad the entire region feels the effects. A better balance between white and blue collar jobs will help the region recover fro economic slumps.

I'm afraid you are only looking at what benefeits us now just like the idiots who run this dump. We need to look ahead. We may loose 250 jobs but it will create so many more and YES MASONS WORK ON PROJECTS OF THE SUCH. I already said what I'm gonna say. Wow, Bernard, you sure do seem to hate other people's views and opinions. Seems to me you are the only one not in the "we" group here. I just tried to lift people's hearts for once and you it down. You're being waaayyyy over sensitive. I don't see anyone capering with glee that people are losing their jobs.

This is what happens when the economy goes bad. It sucks, but it's a fact of life. And it's NOT just Ford jobs, or UAW jobs, or blue collar jobs. Talk to a recently graduated young man I know who is smart, deserving and ready to work hard, yet his specialty is tech and he got laid off three months ago.

It also might surprise you to know that Cleveland is in as good a shape as ever to weather bad economic downturns. And, to keep this post at least semi-relevent to the Civil Aviation forum, it has the opportunity to turn a negative into a positive by wisely planning what to do with the Brookpark plant's real estate. It might be pointed out that Cleveland very likely lost thousands of potential white collar jobs in the 90s because multinational companies like BP found air travel in and out a nonexistent...or a nightmare of puddle jumps to PIT, CVG or ORD.

First of all, they're only closing the aluminum casting plant, and it won't happen probably for at least two years.

Second of all, the aluminum casting plant is well to the south of the extended path of Runway 28, and the remaining plant sections are still in the way.

Not to mention that there are no plans to extend Runway 10/28, and if there were, we'd be talking about major reconstruction of Ohio Rt. 237 and Interstate 71 as well as demolition of the entire Ford Plant.

So in short, NO, this isn't going to affect the airport.

You can actually go into the plant parking lot and drive right beneath the ILS middle marker and the VASI towers. I did that the last time I was down there when 28 was in use.
