Specifically, what are the jobs of the people wearing red coats in airports?

They are Customer Service Managers. They are the leaders for ticket agents and gate agents.

BTW, I thought only Delta had red coats, does every airline have them?

Every airline DOES NOT have them. Personally, I can hardly remember seeing one. Maybe you are thinking of AVIS.  Big thumbs up

America West has them in the hubs. I personally would not call red coats customer service managers. They are really just a low cost alternative to a supervisor at least at HP.

Yes, DL still has redcoats. They used to have bluecoats as well, who assisted international BusinessElite passengers. The bluecoats were eliminated last year due to the bad economy.
