Ok.. Here's the scoop.. I am trying to plan a trip to Auckland in 2003, leaving either FNT or DTW, connecting in LAX, and getting to AKL.. I don't care HOW I get to LAX, just as long as it's a ANZ 747 to AKL.. Jan 17-Feb 9.. I need to know about how much I am going to need to have saved up to pay for the ticket.. I also want to know if there are any specials run for routes like that... I probably won't have the $$ till this August, but I want to know what the damage will be..
If ANY of you, (My Airliners.net family ) have ANY way of finding real cheap flights, as departing times don't really matter, I'd appreciate any advice/help/whatever..
BTW- When I depart, I want to leave from Gisborne..
Thanks in advance!
Chris

Great choice of destination and airline, Chris
Unfortunately I can't help you out with a low fare - the lowest prices are usually only available to be sold in the country of origin - and I'm in NZ. Just to illustrate my point, the cheapest fare I could sell you DFW-AKL/GIS-DFW is USD2089!! Obviously, there are MUCH cheaper fares than that available at the US end.
In terms of departures, all Air NZ flights depart LAX in the evening - the 747 non-stop flight usually departs between 2000 - 2200, depending on the date/week.
Have you considered doing the 'New Coral Route' on the way back? It's AKL-LAX with a stop in the Islands - you can choose from Tahiti, Nandi, or Rarotonga, and is using a 767-300.

Why don't you just try Expedia.com? I'm flying with the family from Orlando (MCO) to Auckland in June this summer and it's UA connecting to NZ-747 at LAX is about $1,442USD round trip per person! And I'm also going to PPT from MCO later in the holiday, you could consider that alternative, and that is about $1,262 per serson round trip! On UA to connect at LAX on TN (Air Tahiti Nui)!

Well, I have found (On united's site, and from a travel agent friend) that I can get from DTW (Detroit) to AKL and back in Sept 2002, for about $1397 usd.. But, I also found DTW-LAX on NW, and LAX-AKL on ANZ for about the same price.. I am just trying to start REAL early planning, as the flights for MY dates aren't in the books yet!!!!!
Anyway, thanks for the help! Keep it coming!

Definitely look in your newspaper for travel agencies that advertise low fares to AKL. You've got to find a "consolidator" who gets the tickets from the airline lower than the published rate. You will save hundreds of $ over Expedia or any of the internet sites will only give you the airlines published fares. BTW, fares to NZ and Australia from the US are very high . Much higher than fares to Asia or Europe. Guess less competition.
