Today, I went to JFK to spot planes from Terminal 1 (They were taking off using 13R/31L (which was interesting, because until 4pm they were taking off on 31L and then switched to 13R after 4pm). Anyway, saw my favorite plane, Alitalia 747-243B.
Does anyone know when exactly they're going to be retired, or when they'll continue service to JFK and where else they'll be flying?

I believe AZ has retired 4 of its Boeing 747-200 aircrafts from its fleet because of September 11. In future, I think AZ will operate Boeing 767-300 aircrafts from Rome and Milan to New York JFK.
AZ originally planned to replace its ageing 747-200 aircrafts with new Boeing 747-400 but they cancelled their plans and Virgin Atlantic bought these planes...it is also interesting to note that VS did not reconfigure these aircrafts with their new Upper Class product.

Alitalia will retire all remaining 747's by summer, when the 777's begin to arrive (AZ cancelled the 747-400 order and replaced it with a 777-200 order). Alitalia will begin to operate the MD11 from MXP and FCO to JFK when the Spring/Summer season begins.

Thanks for the replies. I saw a Virgin 744 sittin on the ramp while watching AZ 742 taking off wishing I could see the 744 in AZ's colors. I'm happy they're getting 777's, but I want a 744 so bad. Oh well. Sad to see those magnificent birds go. I personally (IMHO) felt AZ's colors made the 742 look best!
Any idea which of the pax 742s are still operating?
I know pax are:
Which of those have/have not been retired?
Thanks again in advance.

I saw in November 4 Alitalia B747/200B parked at the same time at Terminal 1 in Milan MXP. Two of these planes were in service, but two were stored in a remote stand. I was there again at the end of December, but the two planes stored were gone. I forgot to write the registration number.
I was in MXP again the 2 January in the evening and I saw AZ used a B742 for the MXP-EZE flight that it use to be with MDD-11.
I also heard that due to the Argentina crisis there is a large request of seats on the EZE-Italy route (over the 50% of the habitants of Argentina have Italian relatives) so AZ sometime use the B742 also on the FCO-EZE.

Where did you go to sopt at JFK? I live in NYC and would want to go out there one day-if only I knew where to go.
I really don't know anything about retirement etc.
