German regional airline RAS Airlines has ceased operations. The last flight was operated on Friday and the company will file for bankruptcy later this week week. The airline operated a number of routes from its Moenchengladbach HQ and served Hamburg, Berlin and - on weekends - a number of destinations from the North Sea Island of Sylt. It operated two ATR42-300s and a wet-leased Beech 1900D. The airline blamed its loss-making Hamburg service, inaugurated at the end of October, as the main reason for becoming insolvent.
This is a major blow for MGL airport that has lost half of its daily departures and now is left with just to routes, VLM to LCY and EAE to MUC.
This leaves only EAE, OLT, City Air and Hahn Airlines as independent regional airlines in Germany.....

I think we could name LGW with its four Do 228-200 as an independent as well... I think EAE is then likely to pick up the Berlin-route and maybe someSylt-Flights.

True, LGW escaped me.
It is more likely that VLM will take over the Berlin route as they planned to open that route in 1997/98. They could not make up their mind back then because of a mangement change and suddenly RAS was already there on the route. EAE has already stated that they don't plan to take over any of the routes for the time being as they are still struggling to consolidate after their expansion. It would, however, make some sense as they should start a THF-NUE service in 2002 and will have a station at THF anyway. We shall see.
Sometimes I really wonder if airlines don't do market reseach. MGL-HAM was an obvious no-go, two airlines had failed on the route in the past within weeks and still RAS stubbornly insisted on offering three daily ATR42 flights - and now they have to pay the price.

Would MGL-HAM support 19-seater? Three ATR42 flights daily makes something around 140-150 seats, same number of flights with a Metro/Do228 equals to 60 seats. Probably a more viable solution.
Has anyone more information about LGW? I recently read somewhere that they have now Hahn Air´s Metro flying for them under a wet-lease contract.

Flying Tiger:
Correct, a Hahn Air Metro is flying for LGW all white with a tiny LGW sticker.
see: http://www.jetstream.ch/d_airlines.html
LGW needed an extra aircraft after they took over the DTM-SRS route from Eurowings. They now have three o 228 based at DTM (for HAM-ERF/DRS/LEJ), one at DUS (for ERF/GWT) and one at CGN (for DTM-HAM-RLG)where usually also the Metro is based for the CGN-Erfurt runs.
Hahn Air has two Metros, with the other one they serve THF-FDH which has just gone up to double-daily.

I´m surprised that LGW didn´t take one of the 30 stored Do 228. Would´make more sense IMO. Do they have any plans to expand in future or to add larger (30-seat) equipment?

As Bernd Walter, the owner of LGW is concerned, he will stick with 19seaters as he regards anything larger difficult to fill in the niche markets he is concentrating on. Below the Team Lufthansa airlines, there will probably only room for airlines like OLT, LGW and City Air with 19seaters as all routes which would justify more than 30-35 seats would be of interest to Team lufthansa ATR42s. I have very serious doubts that EAE will be around for long and after that, it will be down to 19seaters as far as independents are concerned. Even OLT cannot fill their Saab 340A whereever they use the aircraft - in fact they were able to replace it on the MUC-ERF runs with a leased 15 seat DO228-100 after the mishap of their Do 328.

Interesting though that City-Air, OLT´s partner wants to aquire one Saab 340, mainly to replace the leased F27 on the FMO-THF route. I´msurprised that FMO generates more traffic to THF than BRE does. About EAE, I share your opinion. We can be sure that EW dropped the routes which weren´t really profitable and they had a real chance to get rid of their ATR42-300s. We already see that RAS has two ATRs up for sale... I wonder why City-Air and OLT don´t join forces (=merge).
