I just heard from an inside source this evening that ATA has just filed for Chapter 7 Bankruptcy. I haven't seen anything about it, so can anyone confirm it? I know for a fact they cancelled their afternoon PHX-MDW flight today and they have had a L1011 on the ground at PHX for the past 3 days.

Now that they got rid of them 727-200 (nothing against 722) they are probabibly doing better with their fleet of 752 753 738 and charter L1011 (except for IND RSW). Economically they are great planes. Plus they serve very important markets from MDW... so I think they are doing well now.

Who is this inside source anyways?

sorry... i mean scheduled 727 services. Charters are different because they make a profit from the tour company chartering the whole plane, so they can't lose in that.

twa902.... the 727 still do occasional schedualed service. at any rate the poster better disclose the source because i have a couple upcoming reservations on ATA, booked just yesterday. this if true, which i doubt, is not good.

Hopefuly the don't because they have affordable fares and reliable service, it would be a pity if ATA goes bankrupt. From what I last heard (at least) they were doing fine.

Is this a surprise? Not to me.

ATA has always had delays at the airport I worked at. One time one of their planes (I won't say which type)was being fixed and they made passengers wait in the terminal for 6 hours! If I were one of those people waiting, I would make it a point not to give ATA anymore of my business, mostly on part of not providing a free meal or any other act of kindness for the inconvenience.

JMC1975 -

If they were in Chapter 7, they would be liquidating assets and shutting their doors.

Chapter 11 almost always comes first... Reorganization.

I have heard nothing about either and ATA.

So are TZs B727s retired or not? I still see them flying everyday wherever I go. Are they flying charters maybe? Or have the new owners not repainted them yet?

UALbagsmasher..... no they are not retired, ATA had 24 B727 at one point, 14 have been retired/sold, and ATA now owns and operates 10 of them on mainly their own and SY's former chartered routes as well as a few scheduled routes. Also, the 727 are there for a last minute equipment swap if nessecary.

An ATA employee at PHX told the passengers on Flight #572, which cancelled, as well as several employees of America West during the reaccomodation process. Apparently, they were liquidating some aircraft and did not have the aircraft available to take the flight. Again, this is all heresay and I posted this thread to see if anyone knew about this or can confirm it.
