I've heard they were having some problems with the boarding cards (or lack thereof) connecting with the luggage.

Ummm, yeah, we can handle it. We started doing it officially the other day. No problems. I worked the gates today and it went smoothly. The boarding cards are not creating an issue.

The proceedures are in effect, as required by the FAA. The deadline is January 17th, so we are early. They will work just fine. The computers are being upgraded to make the task easier, but we can still do the job with what we've got. Getting the rampers used to the new system, not implimenting one, will be the real pain in the a$$! I think they knew this was coming, hence the 'new' barcoded destination tags w/pax names that are now in use. These will make the task possible, whereas the old tags would have made implimentation of such a system almost impossible.

Understanding the importance about not giving out to much info for risk of giving the secrets away, can someone comment the basics of the new plan in general, ALL bags are to be inspected but with xray or what?

I used to work on the baggage system at DIA and the only bags xrayed were set for international destinations or those the computer randomly picked for secondary screening....So hows it gonna be?

Interesting. I was wondering why WN switched to an all-computerized baggage labelling system as opposed to the old preprinted tags. WN seems to be taking the new security regs like in stride without adding too much cost to the bottom line. Still it is funny getting a boarding pass on it with nothing but your name and destination on it.

We had planned on the automated bag tags before 9-11 happened. We were notified last summer about it.

Well when I was at UA in DEN, Secondary screening was in place, the computer at random would require passengers to have all items go thru a high power xray...Also I know several incidents where bags were queued to be pulled off if a pass. changed travel plans last minute.....

My comments were based on actual operations in the past, and from the comment above, it just sounds like a mass introduction of rarly used practices....Ry

That must have been something done only by UA in DEN and no where else. I have many freinds at UA and none of them were currently doing any of this.
As far as the bags in queue thing goes, I'm that was done for another requirement that was being done at the time, I can't really say on this board what that is, but that procedure has also been greatly enhanced.

The X-ray of checked luggage and positive bag match IS an "introduction of (rarely) used practices". There were very few scenarios when checked baggage was subjected to any screening in the US, much less secondary, at all airlines- not just Southwest. So, you could say that these new procedures ARE whole new ball game for the industry, regardless of the instances where UA chose to do it or required it in the past. When I started in this industry 14 years ago (contract service working various airlines), anybody could check a bag, then fail to board so things have come a long way.

Re: "the [SWA] boarding cards (or lack thereof)". They are not an issue in implimenting this new policy. For instance, if #62 fails to board the aircraft, it's pretty easy to see you are missing a card when you put them in order. It's also very easy to find out who has a reservation and then fails to check in. You can generate names in seconds, no problem. Finding the bags, will take longer as sorting through them takes more time- THAT will be the issue.

Are "ALL bags are to be inspected but with xray or what"? This is the goal, but as of right now there aren't that many X-ray machines or personnel around to do the job. Tens of thousands of extra machines will have to be manufactured. People hired and trained. (Having the deadline of next year to have them all in place sounds pretty hopeful to me!) Until that time, selected pax will be dump searched and hand wanded and the new baggage policies will tighten the loose ends for the Pan Am style bombers.

It may not be perfect (will it ever?) but it's better than before and it's only getting more secure.

Just yesterday I had a pax over in the bar who's boarding pass was missing. My Op's Agent told me we are missing #72 and I used our handy dandy new format to find out who and in no time flat I printed out their name and bag tags. The ramp was in the process of pulling his bags when he showed up and he was simply placed on the next flt to ISP along with his bags. It all worked as planned.
