Air New Zealand cuts international routes:

Air New Zealand plans to drop 13 international flights from its weekly schedule from March, citing a fall in demand.

The airline will discontinue two long-haul flights a week to Honolulu and Los Angeles and cut back on flights from Osaka, Taipei and Hong Kong.

Airline spokeswoman Val Hayes says worries about flying following the terrorist attacks on the United States are largely to blame for a decline in passengers.

The announcement comes two days after Air New Zealand said it would close its reservations centres in London, Vancouver and Los Angeles and move them to New Zealand.

The airline was rescued last year by an 820 million dollar capital injection by the government, which now owns 83 per cent of the carrier.

ANZ currently flies 3x weekly to TPE. I believe the 3rd flight is the seasonal extra flight.

NZ always flies 2x weekly to TPE.

About Osaka, it's not only ANZ will cutback from KIX. KIX will lost several airline and frequencies when NRT opens 2nd runway. Many airline and the newbies has received new and additional slots for NRT.

Looking at Air NZ's situation in general, I really think their future is bleak at the moment. If they had kept Ansett & sold 50% to SQ when they had the chance or allowed SQ to buy News' 50% they would have been a much stronger carrier in the Asia Pacific region.

The NZ market is very small & for Air NZ to grow acquiring Ansett was a logical step. Some wrong decisions eventually resulted in Ansett's demies & Air NZ's government ownership.

I see Qantas lurking in the background  Acting devilish

I highly doubt it - the schedule cuts simply basically return to the winter schedule. No need to panic!
