744s can fly just fine without winglets.

    Nope, not a 747-300...

It was a clear accident, there were wires (?) hanging out the starboard wing-end... port wing still had it.

Didn't catch the reg, but seeing as PAL has only 4 744s, and only 1 of them is at SFO on any given day, shouldn't be too hard to sleuth out.

PAL only flies the 744 and a340 to SFO, no 742s or 743s.

Actually 747-400 do operate with one winglet from time to time. Just look at the pics:

I flew HKG-LHR in October on a CX 744 without the left winglet.

SFOintern- PR only operate the 744 We/Fr/Su arriving in SFO at 1815 and leaving the same day at 2120.
( Only on the ground 3 hours )
If you saw it on a Thursday maybe there was a technical reason that the plane never left on Wednesday night???

If you check older threads in this forum and the tech / ops forum, you'll find out that the one-missing-winglet-on-B744 topic has been discussed about 10 times last year.  Smile

    Bkkair... There you go...

Unlike the pics in the database, the wing-end I saw looked battered...

Battered? Does it look damage having wires poking out or so? Did the plane leave on time and arrive on time? Maybe these will shed some light.
