I believe that the last MD-11 was built sometime in 2001 for Lufthansa cargo. I think they wanted Boeing to build more of them, but Boeing did not want to.

Actually, LH is still pissed that Boeing stopped producing the MD-11. There are some rumours that LH will get some old SR MD11 and sell some A343 to the new SR (If this happens, LH will buy some A346s as replacement)

I wonder why Lufthansa is purchasing some Swissair MD-11s that are powered by PW4462s when their MD-11s are GE CF6 powered?

They don´t really care about the engine commonality in this case. They would have prefered GE-powered ones, however there are non on the market thus the SR ones are the only option to get 11s now (res near future).

Actually, FedEx owns the first one built, but not the first one delivered, as it was still in the flight test program for a bit after the first customer aircraft was delivered.

LH should have cancelled the last MD-11 after Boeing told them, they wouldn't build any more for them. LH must go after Airbus.
Boeing killed MD to have all the competition by her self with Airbus, but this is not that good. Before the MD87 and MD80's were not good enough, but know the B717 is very good - because Boeing is building it !
