Boeing has had Vuelamex's four 717's completed and sitting over at Long Beach for about 2 months now, altho I went past there yesterday and it looks like one's gone, so maybe they took delivery of one...

Although I will love to see VuelaMex start flying (I really want to see the B717 in Mexico and try it), its future is uncertain. VuelaMex management team has most of the former TAESA management team, so if they went bankrupt once, what will keep them from going bankrupt twice. I remember flying on TAESA four months before they end revenue flights and believe me, it was worst than using mexico's rail system (and believe me, riding on a train in Mexico is quite and experience not everyone will like to have). The airplane was a B737-400 and it had the worst cabin view I have ever seen.
I don't really know what will happend with VUELAMEX, but the truth is that the Mexican authorities are aware of the kind of management VUELAMEX has and they have been delaying the certificate.

There are many other airlines and managements who got a second chance and do wonderful since. At least choosing the 717 (instead of some badly maintained old DC-9s) is a good start. I really think a Southwest/AirTran modelled airline will work in Mexico (seeing sometimes horrific domestic fares when only AM/MX fly there).
So my idea was the Mexican authorities scrutinize and block VuelaMex ops so far, because they want to protect the AM/MX combi which have a bad time already since Sept. 11. Do you think that might be the actual case?
nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?

I know that there are second chance airlines that are doing so good, but you have to believe me on this with the ex TAESA managers. They are not airline managers, they are only traditional company managers who think the airline business is plain and simple. When TAESA started back in 1990, they only flew new aircraft: B737-300, B737-400, B737-500 and B757-200 and some B727's, the average fleet age was 1.7 years in 1991. And what happend? They couldn't deal with the leases and started returning the new birds and replacing them with the B727-100, B727-200, B737-200 and DC9 series. TAESA's CEO even went to jail because of taxes not paid by TAESA to the mexican finance ministry. I really hope VuelaMex starts flying, but hope they don´t become a TAESA in the future. And don´t get me wrong, TAESA used to be my favourite airline until 1995, they gave me the only jumpseat I've ever had on a B757-200. But they do know how to send an airline to bankruptcy.

One of the 717s that WAS in the VuelaMex scheme at LGB is now either still in the paint shop or done being painted for AirTran. I think this is a pretty good sign that VuelaMex isnt going to be able to get off the ground.

I can tell the same thing of TAESA, they were just more than great until 1996... and also you are just saying the truth.. they start with new and great acft.. but they couldn´t handle al the leases of those acft.
