I was scheduled to fly UL from DUS to ORD on 4 March, and found out the flight has been canceled! It now flies DUS - IAD.

Any idea why UL changed the schedule?

Old news! The reason is because IAD provides better feed to the East coast. UA's DUS service is the ONLY daily service between the United States and DUS. Outside of that, the only year-round service is LTU to Ft. Meyers and Miami (and they have summer service to LAX and Orlando). It makes it easier for connections to places such as NYC, PHL, BOS, etc. than ORD.

As stated above,IAD is better situated in the middle of those cities. Plus many airlines offer connections to place on the West Coast out of IAD. Frankly I think it could just be that they were looking at where the majority of those people on the flight connected to. maybe they found it easier for the majority to just make it one flight.
This is just what I think

It's new news to me; my travel agent neglected to tell me about the schedule change.  Angry

Since my return trip got cancelled, does that mean I can change my return date without a penalty?  Confused

Lufthansa has axed the DUS-EWR service after 9/11 which means that Star Alliance travellers to the East Coast via ORD would have do quite a lot of backtracking to get to their destination (in addition to the fact that the arrival at ORD was quite late in the evening, AFAIK)
