Did you know that the strongest surface winds ever recorded were 318mph? It was during a tornado. This is enough wind to classify it as an F-5, and 1mph less than it needed to be an F-6 tornado. To be an F-6, the winds need to be anywhere between 319mph to Mach 1. I read this in Barry Schiff's book 1001 things you thought you knew about aviation and I thought it was interesting so I posted it here  Smile.

Good to know his book is out! I'll have to pick it up. One night I got to sit with Barry at a Women In Aviation banquet and we traded aviation trivia. At the time I was working on a trivia quiz for the "Ninety Nines" and he jumped at the chance to share knowledge. What's the former name of LAX? Of SFO? Why is O'Hare "ORD"? He even knew what lady was the winningest "Powder Puff Derby Racer" ever. Little did I know she was his instructor waaaay back when! (Kudos if anyone else knows THAT anwser.)
