Donation the Result of Grass Root Effort
By Delta's Technical Operations Employees

NEW YORK, Jan. 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL)
presented a check today for $10,825 to New York's Uniformed Firefighters Association (UFA) Scholarship Fund. The money will benefit the children of New York City firefighters who lost their lives in the attack on the World Trade Center.
The money was raised through the sale of T-shirts to employees of Delta's Technical Operations Division. This division provides maintenance, repair and engineering services for Delta's mainline fleet.
Twenty-four hundred T-shirts were produced, and they sold out in just a few days. The shirts featured bold patriotic design, with a Delta jet in flight against the backdrop of the American flag, and a similarly themed tagline: "Together Freedom Will Never Be Grounded."
The donation was made at Engine 40, Ladder Company 35, on West 66th Street and Amsterdam Avenue in Manhattan; nine firefighters from that station lost their lives on Sept. 11th. In presenting the check, Jim Maucere, Delta's vice president of Base, Engine and Component Maintenance, said, "The idea of designing and selling a T-shirt like this is a tribute to the patriotism of our workforce and to our determination that we will not yield to threats against our nation or our way of life."
Co-presenter Jerry Bemis, Delta's vice president of Line Maintenance Operations, added: "Our technicians bought these shirts at a time when there was concern regarding the future of our industry security. But a hardship is nothing compared to what was endured by the brave men and women in the New York Fire Department who made the ultimate sacrifice in the performance of their duties. Under the circumstances, this was the least that we could do."
In accepting the donation, Ed Burke, executive board member for the UFA, remarked: "We are very moved by the generous spirit and patriotism of Delta's employees. To be able to pull off something like this in the face of extraordinarily difficult times for the airline industry is a testament to the character of your people. Thank you very much."
The Uniformed Firefighters Association (UFA), Local 94 of the IAFF is the largest firefighters union local in the world, representing 9,100 New York City Firefighters and Fire Marshals. Since its founding in 1917, the UFA has fought to improve and protect the lives of New York City's firefighters and their families.
Delta Air Lines, the world's second largest carrier in terms of passengers carried and the leading U.S. airline across the Atlantic, offers more than 5,350 flights each day to 414 destinations in 73 countries on Delta, Delta
