It was announced today that we will be acquiring gate A7 and A8 at SJC and will be adding 45 more flights by the end of the summer. That will bring us to about 120 flights a day which puts us up by LAS and PHX. Cool huh...

Exciting news, but I'm a little confused and have several questions regarding this.

Who made this announcement? Was it an internal announcememnt to employees only or has this been/will this be reported to the media?

What gates does Southwest currently use at SJC? Don't you already use Gate A-7? When you go to Southwest's website and click on "Airport Information" for SJC, it currently says:

"Gate Information: Southwest Airlines uses gates 2 through 7 which are located on the main level in terminal A."

I haven't gotten the latest timetable from Southwest, so I'm going by the 10/28/2001 flight schedule which shows 74 daily departures out of SJC (M-F). OK... if you have 74 departures and 6 gates now (I'm assuming each Gate only has 1 jetway) that's already 12.34 departures per gate which is stretching it even for Southwest.

How is Southwest going to be able to add 45more departures per day with only 2 new gates?

I kind of find this hard to believe. Right now A7 is a shared gate with AA/WN and A8 is Americans Gate. As we build out schedule back up to around 91% of pre September 11th by June, we will need that gate space. I find it very hard to believe we would give it up.
Also, A7 does have the ability to handle widebody aircraft and AA uses gate A7 for its mid day bank flight to JFK. In all likely hood this flight will go back to a 767 this summer and AA would need gate A7 to park it.

Aa777flyer- do you work for AA at SJC?

Anyways, our station manager announced it, and the changes will take place in August. It is for sure that we are acquiring A7 and 8. Right now we share 7 with AA which is a pain. I highly doubt AA will return that 67 this summer for JFK, as this past fall and summer was the first time I have ever seen that, and with all the cuts, doesn't look like that'll be back in my opinion. Southwest handles more departures and arrivals a day compared to AA here at SJC. The 45 additional flights are split, 20 arrivals and departures and a couple originators and/or terminators. The question now is, will we get the offices and T-point below 7 and 8...

Well that is news to our station manager that we are giving up 7 & 8.......maybe the city has not told us yet. I really dont see it though. Even if the 767 does not come back this summer we will be adding more frequency and we cannot do it from 9-16B
we are adding

2 JFK
2 AUS
4 PHX
2 DFW
2 ORD
2 BOS
....rumors listed below........

4 SEA
3 PDX
2 YVR
1 GDL (I really hope this one does not happen- ever watch MX check in?)

...we cannot do that from 9-16B

Yup I work in SJC

Weird that we'd be taking those gates if your station manager knows nothing about it. I think if you check with them, they might know a lil somthin...  Smile

Also, adding 40 some odd flights compared to adding 14 with a few visions is call for more gates for the 40 additional. We're runnin outta space real quick, we've got full flights, lotsa flights, and not enough room. Growin pains... I think if you guys were still at capacity and normal schedule, it would make sence to keep those gates, but really...now with more flights, why would u guys have those two gates, 9-16b is sorta it's own little section, and 2-8 is it's own section too- too much conflict switching ground eqp., desk stuff, etc... What do you do for AA, ramp? We should grab somthing to eat one of these days during work..

Thank you for clarifying that for me, SJCguy, but if that's the case, that will still not bring SJC's total operations anywhere near PHX or LAS. You're basically talking about 23 new departures per day. (23 departures + 23 arrivals would be 46 new operations.)

If SJC currently has 74 daily departures (148 total operations per day) and you add 23 new departures that would be 97 departures per day. That would place SJC somewhere between LAX and BNA going by info on Southwest's website regarding their 10 busiest cities.

City / Departures

Phoenix 183 Departures
Las Vegas 170 Departures
Houston Hobby 143 Departures
Baltimore/Washington 134 Departures
Dallas (Love Field) 131 Departures
Oakland 120 Departures
Chicago Midway 119 Departures
Los Angeles (LAX) 114 Departures
Nashville 87 Departures
San Diego 77 Departures

Ordinarily, I wouldn't nit-pick, but when I saw your original post I kind of got excited because on the Southwest board over at USAviation.com, someone started a thread called "Something's Up". The person indicated that Southwest would be hiring lots of new pilots throughout the remainder of the year - enough for about 35 new planes. Everyone was wondering where all these new planes were going to go and HOU, and MCI were some of the guesses.

I was all set to run over there and say maybe SJC, too and mention your post, but now I think I'll wait. (Actually, I don't have a choice right now, because for some reason, every time I've tried to go to USAviation.com today, I've ben redirected to Dellhost.com. Their site must be having technical problems  Smile )

I'm really just guessing what the 45 additional flights are, it may just be departures, I'm not sure. I know for sure however, they will be adding non stops from SJC to MDW, BNA and ABQ. We'll see..

Southwest is pretty tight-lipped about new service announcements...if true, I can't believe SJC mgmt meant for this information to be broadcast in advance of a news release.

Besides, Southwest has rarely ramped up service in one market so substantially in such a short period...your indicating a nearly 33% increase in SJC service.

Maybe "YES" most likely "NO"

One of the "rumors" today at work is that WN will take A7 & A8 (once the new FIS is complete). AA will take F2 and F3 gates (F1 will be arrivals only for AS and MX) AA will take A2 and share A3 with WN. Then WN will have WN would then have the shared A3 thru A8. I doubt very highly that AA would give these gates up. We may have down sized quite a bit from 9/11 in SJC, but SJC is still one very important market for AA. Matter of a fact prior to 9/11 we had 4 of the most profitable routes in the system......

PS SJC guy.. I work in passenger service... I think I took you on a tour of our 777 tonight!  Smile
