Back in 1996, I flew one of two remaining 747-100's operated by Aer Lingus on the Dublin (DUB)-Shannon (SNN)-Boston (BOS) route. EI-BED was the registration. This plane was approximately 25 years old at the time because my father told me that was the exact plane he flew on his tour of Europe in 1971 after graduating college. That plane was really in a sorry state.
Does anyone out there in Forumland know what happened to it? Is the A330-300 still the largest aircraft in EI's fleet?

Unfortunately or fortunately, EI-BED was retired in 1995 to the desert where it was scrapped in 1997/98. As for EI-ASI, and EI-ASJ, the two other B747-100's they apparently are still intact, but have been stored in the desert after been sold to Kabo air.
Both ASJ, and ASI were ordered straight from Boeing arriving in 1970 and 1971 where as BED was bought from Lufthansa and arrived in 1979. Thus while it was an Aer Lingus 747 which your father travelled on, it couldn't have been EI-BED.
In regard to the A330, yeah it sure is the largest aircraft in the Aer Lingus fleet, although a World Airways MD-11 is leased in each summer for additional lift.

Aer Lingus 747 EI-BED was a former Lufthansa plane, registered D-ABYC and was aquired by Aer Lingus in 1979. So I think your father is wrong. He flew on EI-ASI or EI-ASJ, the two original 747s of EI.
EI-BED was broken up in 1997 as far as I know.

Thank you both for your help. You are correct. I was confused about the registration....I put down EI-BED because I saw that in a coffee table book on the history of aviation. In reality, nobody (including dear old Dad) could be expected to remember such an insignificant detail.
The 741 in question was undoubtedly on its way to being sold...the fuselage was all-white and the tail had absolutely no markings on it whatsoever. The plane was very much run down. I also remember seeing the other 741 in Dublin--it still held the EI livery from the 1980's.
