What will westjet have in store for new routes out of YWG as it is a major focus city and the 3rd hub. Westjet has recently added Sudbury salut ste marie, thompson and regina. What citys will they add and will they add on the YWG-YYC and the YWG-YHM route. what are your predictions....
Westjet also announced that 50% of all their flights this year will go through Winnipeg International airport.
All I can say is WAA had better get expanding quite soon on a westjet concourse cause other airlines are fed up with westjet using their gate (Northwest and Air Canada).

I hope they add YWG-YYZ, even 1 flight per day would be nice.

I doubt that YWG-YYZ will happen mainly because of the operating costs out of Toronto. The reason why thye have slots in YYZ is to fly transcontinental routes to YXX, YYC, YVR, and YEG. YWG-YHM is so successful that a YYZ-YWG route would be useless, no connections from Toronto are going to be made. Calgary-Toronto is the highest travelled corridor int he country.

What about YWG-YOW?

My pick and hope is YWG-YOW. YWG777 a correction to what you said...WJ hopes to increase their traffic at YWG by 50% this year, not have 50% of all their flights operating through YWG.

By recently to Regina, do you mean within the last 3 years? Westjet has been flying to Regina for a while now, haven't they?

They suspended Winnipeg-Regina runs for awhile but they figured that it was profitable again. They still did serve Regina though.

Westjet is also adding as saturday flight to YVR. IT would be nice to see Westjet adding a direct flight to YOW and YUL to compete with AC. I sure hope Westjet expands to the US from YWG as then maybe NW would have a war on their hands if they did that. I can also see in the near future a diurect flight to Victoria and North Bay Ontario.

Westjet might eventually service North Bay, as there is a market there for a low-cost service. When I lived there from '96 to '98, there were people taking shuttle buses to YYZ to catch their flights -- a four-hour ride each way -- as an alternative to taking Air Ontario.

But North Bay service, if and when it comes, will probably be through Hamilton. The city doesn't have many linkages to the rest of the world outside of southern and northeastern Ontario (a couple of people even said I spoke with an accent!), but there are a fair number of provincial civil servants and university students with ties to southern Ontario.

Yeah but Air Ontario operates dash 8's which don't have the same capacity as the 737. So which might fill a Dash 8 might not fill the 737. I suppose they could do a 3 times a week thing though.

With Westjet's successful Ottawa-Hamilton runs, I think Montreal can't be too far away.

Fly Westjet!

They are currently in the talks for leasing 2 737 aircraft to serve toronto! If they get them they will start serving YYZ in May!

Well I thought WS only had 6 slots in YYZ? I am surprised that Westjet hasn't added anymore flights on the YHM-YOW run. UYUL can't be that far off eathier. I hope Westjet expands into North Bay Ontario doing YWG-Northbay-YHM I think it would reaslly work cause then Northbay Onatrio has a new city to the west for them to connect through and a new city to the east to connect through. They don't get much traffic other than AC to YYZ.

I agree. With a population of about 55,000, North Bay is a bit small to have daily 737 service. But a less frequent service would be sufficient to pick up people who currently drive or take the train or bus to southern Ontario (assuming that Ontario Northland still offers those services).

I'm not sure how much demand there is for a western service from YYB. When I was there, North Bay's economy was largely geared around the military base, its role as a regional hub for provincial government offices, and Canadore College and Nipissing University. The most significant private sector employer I can think of was the Boart Longyear drill bit plant. So, with the possible exception of the base, there wasn't really much there to connect YYB to the western provinces.

However, I can see a YYB-YHM service being popular with college and university students, and for family traffic, since it seemed that many long-time North Bay residents had family members who'd moved away to find careers.

Well look at Thompson its only 15,000 people big differrence there and they have just about daily service to Winnipeg. If North Bay is 55,0000 people Westjet can diffently support that kind of market.I didn't think Northbay had that many people.... Wow is that alot.

I could definitely see WJ flying 3x weekly to both YHM and YWG, with an onwards one-stop to YYC or YVR.

Remember that AC use to fly DC-9s YTS-YYB-YYZ until 1990. So for a city of it's size, North Bay has certainly been lacking jet service, just like YAM and YSB until recently and YXU soon.

YYB along with YTS and YQG will surely get WJ service within a year or two.

I think Northbay would work well for Westjet except the onlything is that its stuck right between YAM and YSB which I think might cause them to hold off on Northbay for a while until they have gotten themselves a little more establish in northcentral ontario.

Fly_yhm North Bay is not between YSB and YAM. It's east of YSB.

Wow I didn't know how large Northbay was! Air Ontario must operate quite a few Dash 8's out of there. With that size I am sure they could handle a 737. In the other place I live YZF there is 6-8 737 flights a day. Mind you those are combi's.

Also with YFZ, there aren't too many options besides flying. It's a long drive to Edmonton from Yellowknife. Air Ontario only has 4 flights a day to (5 from) YYZ. So not that many. In fact, as far as I know, YYB only has 8 scheduled flights a day: 4 ACR, 2 JV to YOW and 2 JV to YSB/YQT.

Yeah Edmonton is a 14 hour drive, if I didn't get company passes though I wouldn't be flying. An hour flight is not worth 1 hour flight!

YWG is going to need more jetways for Westjet. I was at a meeting today and a fellow aquantince of mine was there who I maybe see 1 time a moth said that WAA is running out of jetways. Any idea of expansion for westjet or for them to get their own concourse.
I also am hoping for a westjet to take on AC tango a bit too.
