I read somewhere Air New Zeland was fitting PTV's in Economy/Pacific Class on its 747-400. Has this happend yet or is it still to come? Will the 767-200/300 follow?

I'm sure it will happen oneday on the 744's, I don't no about the 763's but the 762's certainly won't ever get them as these are the oldest aircraft in the fleet and will probably leave within the next 2-3 years.

Hmmm, with their current financial situation, I think any plans for PTVs will be on hold. Then again, many of the 'informed' people that write letters to the editor of the New Zealand Herald seem to note that Air New Zealand is 'Absolutely Pathetic' because it does not have PTVs in economy and because of this the service sucks completely... Some people...!

Agreed V/F..and to answer the question
YES, PTV were planned for Sep 2001, but were shelved becuase of a crisis with there Finbancial situation, we should expect to see them online in around 1-2 years!! Maybe Next SEP when they should return to profibility! Or maybe not, with what QF are trying to do!

If kiwis are complaing about the old style service and Pacific Class in our national airline they can blame themselves they own it but they dont fly it. They decide to fly the competition Qantas. But i say its AirNZ all the way

Hear Hear Air NZ! It strikes me that so many people are overly obsessed with PTVs these days. They are nice to have, but they are not that essential. If I have to choose between an airline with usually excellent service and no PTV (*cough*Air New Zealand*Cough*) and an airline with PTVs but usually average service (*cough*Qantas*cough*), I wouldn't hesitate in taking the former. Hence why I am flying Air New Zealand tomorrow!

I'd like to fly Air NZ when I can, but it is noticably more expensive on several routes, both domestic and international.

For example, why fly to Sydney rtn on NZ for $599, when you can go on Thai for $459?

Auckland to Wellington rtn on Air NZ for, at best, $178 (internet fare), when Qantas can give you $150 if you get the right flight.

Food for thought.

Where I have a choice of airlines and the prices are more or less the same - I always go for the airline with the PTV. I find there is little difference in service - but I cannot speak for the luxury usually Asian airlines which I have never flown on!

Aerokiwi - Air NZ can never compete against Thai's price on the AKL-SYD run because Thai make all their money from the pax that go AKL-BKK on the same plane. In addition, Thai go once daily at peak time, when Air NZ go 3 times daily to offer frequency and choice to travellers.

As for the AKL-WLG example - if you'd fly on the airline that's running it's NZ domestic operations at a loss and 'intends to put Air NZ out of business' just to save 28 bucks, I have nothing to say to you.

You miss my point. I'm just saying that I can fully appreciate why people choose the competition over Air NZ. Price comes first for so many people. It can be the difference between going somewhere and not. National pride is likely to be waaaaay down the list when choosing an airline to fly on.

Say a family of four (all adult age) needed to get to Wellington from AKL in a hurry. They can get $178 per person on Air NZ or $150 pp on Qantas. That $28 difference suddenly becomes a $112 difference. It all adds up eventually.

QF is *not* a premium airline in NZ. They don't have to support loss-making off-peak flights to unprofitable destinations.

Anyway, I'm sure given QF's recent bad publicity in the press here, NZ will gain even more support!

Well if it doesnt turn a profit then why should that half of New Zealand have an air service in the big scheme of things? Its a business not a charity! Fair enough I guess when you have a government airline with the taxpayer bailing it out.
At least its something the taxpayers of Australia have not had to do with Qantas.

Aerokiwi (and others who argue the same point) - you are missing the fact that by supporting Qantas in their questionable behaviour on the New Zealand market they are going to precipitate a major drop of service and increase of cost should NZ collapse. Despite their desperate backpeddalling on the subject, it isnt a big secret that they would prefer a world without Air New Zealand competing with them. These comments from Dixon come on top of the deliberate spanner thrown in the works last year during government negotiations with Singapore Airlines over that airline increasing its stake in Air New Zealand. Qantas knew it would never get permission to purchase Air New Zealand, but it made the move because it new a significant delay, started by that, could cause problems for Air New Zealand/Ansett. The delay was enough for time to run out on Ansett.

If Air New Zealand was to go out of Business, we would be left soley with an all-economy class domestic product, with no competition. I can just picture the same clowns (Not you Aerokiwi, more the letter writers in the NZ Herald) who moan about high prices today on Air New Zealand crying bloody murder about Qantas if they had a monopoly.

Oh well, I guess some people refuse to see things in a context...

V-Jet - 2 Things - first of all, an Airline is a public service. While profit is important, it must be remembered that they are providing a vital service to smaller towns, and that this service must be maintained, regardless of profit. Secondly, similar things have happened in Australia. In Queensland (and I am pretty sure in WA as well) services to remote regions have been subsidised by state government to allow continuation of those vital services.

Actually, speaking of dumb letters to the editor, did anyone see a few days ago those ones about the service at Auckland Airport? One guy wrote from Australia saying he would never return to holiday in NZ because of the service at Auckland Airport!

How completely ridiculous! What kind of idiot forgoes an entire country just because he had one bad experience at its main airport? I was tempted to write in and reply, reminding everyone that there are plenty of other airports in NZ to choose from, but really, who can be bothered?

Just thought it was kinda funny.

"first of all, an Airline is a public service." no it isn't...it is a business first of all, an airline doesn't have to operate a route just for the sake of it, It's primary aim is to make a profit...once they have a profit then they can decide whether or not they want to eat into their profits on unprofitable routes....the problem with NZ is that it persists in flying these routes first and then trys to make a profit, which is almost impossible to do. If I was to use an analogy it would be a cricket batsman that comes out onto a pitch that is spinning & seaming a lot and trys to hit 6s from the first ball instead of playing the smaller strokes to get their eye in and then can go for the big shots later if they have wickets in hand. From a business point of view NZ should have been folded and the Government should have backed a new state airline instead. This is an opinion shared by many people on the business scene.

Well, "Air NZ" (the user) is right in a way, about us not flying our national carrier. But really, there are certain things that do make other airlines more attractive....

Think about it... First the price... And it differs quite a lot! AKL-SIN, druing June, I just asked my travel agent today, SQ for $1049, NZ for $1399.... Which will you choose? That's almost a diffrence of $400!

And the PTVs.... I was on a Cathay flight just last week, and the person beside me was just so happy that she decided to choose CX when she saw that her seat was equipped with PTV. And they DO make a diffrence on 10+ hour flights.....

As for service.... Hey, most of the major airlines that fly here have world class service.... SQ, Thai, CX, Malaysia, United, yes, even Qantas (depends on yourself).....

Back to the topic...... Of course, PTV aren't a necessity, getting there happy AND safe is the important thing..... But PTVs are part of every airline's upgrade, and if AirNZ isn't following this trend, it's gonna lose out to the other players, and it can't blame anyone but itself then......

Air NZ has been competing against carriers with PTVs for over 5 years and have been perfectly successful.
Many, MANY fliers prefer the extra 2" of pitch NZ offer over the tvs, which would be lost if tvs were fitted.

NZ is a premium carrier (yes, even without the gadgetery ie ptvs) and 744s stagger into AKL from LAX daily filled to the brim, despite the lack of an idiot-box in each seat.
