Hi, I noticed a different terimal on the side of runway 23R at Indianapolis International. It can be seen here in this photo near the bottom. It looks like a United Airlines terminal. Does anyone know what this is or why it's there even though they go to terminal C. Thanks!

Terminal B is all I know. Gate B1, B2 is American Airlines. Gate B3 is America West. Gates B4-B6 is Delta. I also know that all of Terminal D is Usairways. Besides that all I know is that Southwest and Northwest are in Terminal A and United, ATA, Midwest Express, and Continental is in Terminal C. Hope this helps. A few times a week Air Canada comes in from Toronto at either gate B4 or B5.

why do airlines make these secondary airports maintance bases. i would have thought that united would rather make a bigger maintance base in ord, rather than ind where they have to fly all the planes to.

United put its maintenance facility at IND because they got big tax breaks from the State of Indiana to do it; the space needed to build a maintenance base is more plentiful and usually cheaper at "secondary" airports as well.
I'm guessing the new terminal project at IND is on hold since the airlines pitched a fit about how much they'd end up paying in rentals and landing fees as a result.

Okay, now to make a few corrections
-Midwest Express actually flies out of one of NWs gates in Concourse A, ME is actually Skyway now, no more ME. ME did use concourse c when they flew mainline flights there but then they pulled out to focus resources on MCI
-Midfield terminal, im not sure of the exact timeline we are looking at now, it looked like they had broke ground when I was taxing in on a WN flight back in Aug. It is going to have a highway coming in off of I-70 at the west end of the airport. I-70 runs along the south edge of the airport currently. The current terminal is on the east side of the airport and is accessed by I-465 and Airport Expressway. I am not sure what they are going to do with Airport Expressway since it will no longer go to the terminal, I suppose just call it Raymond Street since that is what it evuantually turns into.
-Other I-70 notes. The Indiana Department of Transportation is considering rerouting I-70 1000 ft. south of its current location to allow expansion of the fed ex facilities. Fed ex has expanded just about all it can without crossing to the other side of I-70, which would be a logistical nightmare. The employee parking is already on the south side of the interstate along high school road. Fedex runs shuttles back and forth. I guess that is good news that they want to expand their presence at IND, its new jobs, thats the way I look at it.
Why build your maintence terminal at IND vs. ORD. First, land is cheaper. Second, the State of Indiana gave them one heck of a deal. Third, there is room to expand. Fourth, the cost of living in Indianapolis is a fraction of the cost of living in chicago, so you can pay your employees less. I think that the only thing that is keeping ATA from completely moving everything to MDW.
Passenger breakdown, according to an article on Indystar.com the other day, US Airways has 15% of the boardings at IND, WN 14% And TZ (ATA) 12%

As for airline gates:
Southwest - Gates A1,A2,A3
Northwest - Gates A4,A5,A6,A7
Skyway - Gate A8
American - Gates B1,B2
America West - Gate B3
Delta - Gates B4,B5,B6(AirCanada's flights also use these)
United - Gates C1,C2,C3
Continental - Gates C5,C6 and sometimes C8
ATA - Gates C9,C10 and sometimes C4 and C7
USAirways - Gates D1 through D10 although they usually just use D5 through D8 with the occassional D2 or D9.
USAirways isn't stupid. Even though they really only need four gates in D, they retain the lease on all ten gates to preclude any Vanguard, JetBlue or AirTran wannabes from using the other six gates as a start-up, low-fare hub.
LV is correct about moving I-70 for the further expansion of the FedEx hub but he forgot to mention that they are also going to lower the interstate to allow for crossover taxiway bridges to provide access to the third parallel runway planned for the south side of I-70.
The third runway is still about ten years away but the midfield terminal is on schedule to be completed by 2005 to 2006. Information on the midfield terminal can be viewed at http://www.indianapolisairport.com

Thanks for clearing that up ZID. Fishers eh, I am an Avon native myself. My mom still lives there so I am in Indianapolis 4 or 5 times a year.
I have heard about the taxiway over I-70 but I didnt hear anything about it when I heard they were relocating the interstate so I figured they dropped that idea. Amazingly I heard that much from WIBC.
So how much land are they going to have to take south of the interstate to build this runway. I mean you have that tralier park down there, a lot of tralier parks in that area. Rerouting Hanna Ave., High School rd. and maybe even Kentucky Ave. Its almost as if they are going to go clear down almost to Decauter Central. Heck, they basically are out to Plainfield now (does the airport own any land in Hendricks Cty. or is it strictly in Marion Cty.?) Also, Monarch Beverage just built that nice new facility back there, is that going to be gone?
What is going to happen to the old TW gate? Is AA still using it for STL flights? I figured WN would snap it up as soon as possible.
Also, does NW really need four gates, I never understood why they have all four?
Any chance you think IND will ever see mainline ME service again or at least the D328s?
Also, the way US airways is bleeding cash, I think eventually they will have to give up part of Concourse D. If that is the case I imagine at least one new airline will come in. You might also get to a point where BAA will just want to bring in a new airline and force US Airways out, similar to what might end up happening at BWI.
If anything opens up in Concourse D I think Air Tran will be the next ones we see come in. I dont imgine Jetblue coming to Indy because CO has 3 flights a day to EWR and there are 5 dailies to LGA between Atlantic Coast Jet and US AIrways

I am sure you will once again see Midwest express. After 9-11 Midwest changed a lot of cities to only Skyway cities. BDL was one of them which was changed to daily Dorniers instead of the usual 2 DC-9's. This spring they will be back to 2 DC-9's so I am sure IND would be in the plans as well. Probably just a temporary thing.

Glad to catch the latest on IND. As a former resident of "Circle City"/"NapTown!"(1982-86) I like to keep up on the latest. Generally when I come back for the 500 and now the F-1, I fly into FWA or CVG to see family/friends. The last time I used IND as maybe 5-7 yrs ago. Still a great airport!
I do hope that when the mid-field terminal is built they move the TWA 707 plaque to it.( First 707 operator at IND, 1960 or 61 as I recall)

The BAA Indianapolis website has a snazzy PDF-format color report about the midfield terminal, complete with very detailed diagrams and computer-sim graphics. If the new terminal does get built, it will be beautiful--rolling atrium roof, long bright concourses. Funny, the landside terminal resembles the T5 plans for Heathrow, I can't imagine why that would be.
Most airport gate leases have clauses that allow the airport to demolish gate space and re-lease it if they want to build something new. If US Airways gets recalcitrant, and the new terminal gets put off, Indy can always just demolish D to build something different, and tell US Airways where to stuff their anticompetitive squatting. But US will be bankrupt within 2 years anyway, so Indy may just wait them out.
I wouldn't give up on JetBlue, LV. They were interested in Cleveland but the incompetent Cleveland airport management fumbled them. JetBlue is interested in the Midwest, as evidenced by their advisory future-city list. At ROC, BUF, and SYR, where CO and US also have flights to NY, JetBlue is doing extremely well.

A little off subject but since it has been brought up, what cities are on jetBlues future cities adviosry list? In addtion to Indy I am particular interested in a rumor that they are looking at BLV (or BVL, I might have that confused) which is Mid America Airport in Belleville, IL near St. Louis. You think there is any possibility for them there or are they going to wait till everything settles down at Lambert?
