DAL Troubles In DFW

Recently I was talking to a very prominant and well respected airline analyst and he said that DAL is being killed by AMR in Dallas. Is AMR really killing Delta in DFW. I know that DFW can easily accomodate a 'double' hub, but can DAL survive if this is true????

They don't need to actually, but I seriously doubt that American would attempt to boot them out because that would mean boosting their service and lowering fares, which isn't a good combination for major airlines. Businessmen like to stay with one airline and if American kicks Delta out there will be some serious problems.

Delta will not die in DFW. If I recall I believe AMR was battling it out with SouthWest in Love. And as I also recall American lost the war. Delta has a great market share in DFW, but an even greater share in Cincy and Atlanta. What do you mean can Delta Survive? Delta could survive practically anything. Lots of Planes, lots of resources lots of capital.

DL has ATL,CVG,SLC to worry about as well as DFW. There wasnt enough planes in the fleet to add service at all the hubs, due to AAs major hub at DFW it made sense to use the planes at a place like CVG,SLC where they could have more control over passengers instead of try to worry about what AA was going to due next. As AA expanded at DFW DL had to decide to keep up or give way to AA and expand elsewhere which they did. DL still has a large operation at DFW but has shrunk a lot over the last 4-5 years along with ASAs flights as well. I have heard that ASA may be bringing the regional jets to DFW soon.

To help Delta Airlines in Dallas, Air France is due to open a nonstop flight to CDG from DFW. The flight will bring in some European passengers into DL's hub at DFW.

Ok guys, here is my 2 cents! I live in Dallas, Texas. I fly out of DFW at least once every 2-3 months. It should really be called American Airlines International Airport! Delta has a very small prescence here compared to American. Also, American offers much more convenient schedules to most places. Whereas Delta will go somewhere such as LAX 3 times a day, AA has flights throughout the day. I have tried several times to book a Delta flight, but the times, and suprisingly the costs were not what suited me.
Delta uses many widebodies here. Interesting, to see, but again, not enough frequencies.

I completely agree with DC10@DFW, and I don't see what's the AF service to DFW is gonna change about it. It will give some feed to DL, but then again AF is flying to Atlanta as well, and may even open a flight to CVG besides the already existing CDG-DFW flight operated by DL.

It seems to me that AF was planning to go to DFW anyway, and that the fact of DL having a hub there is just an additinal plus.

Why would DL want to get some International flights into their DFW-hub? They closed their own Frankfurt frequency a couple of years ago.

No, believe me, DL is not putting to much efford into its DFW hub, which would be highly necessary if they really would want to compete with AA.

Limited number of destinations, restricted number of frequencies... that's not what the high yield passenger is looking for. I guess for a DL customer DFW is a good airport to connect through if flights through other hubs (ATL, CVG, SLC) have been booked full.

For what I can see now, DFW has no bright future as a DL hub.

When Delta was flying to FRA they had to base a wide-body at DFW, whereas AF has all its wide-bodies based at CDG. So this is going to be more economical for AF to operate this flight.

Delta is going to take all the passengers from Air France, not ony flying from France to that region of USA, but also all the passengers from Europe, Africa and Middle East it carries to that region of the North America.

CO-AF tie up is going to end within two years (IIRC), and AF will have to find another suitable way to carry its passengers to South-West USA.

For sure Delta will not stay at DFW just because AF will bring them passengers from across the Atlantic, but that could make all the difference between weather operations are worth or not.

I think the future of DFW's hub is developping international flights, making the ASA a feeding network. Why not flights to Mexico in cooperation with Aeromexico ? To Latin America ?
DL has no suitable hub for flights on SE Asia. Why wouldn't they make DFW their main base for flights to SE Asia ?

Delta I would think is attempting on routing all international flights through PDX and nowadays through LAX as well. DFW doesn't mean a lot to Delta at this point, but when AF gets going and starts feeding people in American will have problems getting new airlines in to help them.

Compared to ten years ago, when (i believe I am right on this one) Dallas was Delta's second largest hub behind Atlanta it has really become a small operation in comparison. But as people have mentioned, Delta is focusing more on the main hubs they have presently. I think of Dallas being a hub for Delta to bring many of their customers from the East to the West or vise versa. When I flew to Ontario, CA over the holidays Delta routed me from Louisville through Dallas to Ontario. As mentioned I have seen the reduction of service out of DFW in the past decade, but I do not believe Delta is giving it up. The freqency of flights I am not familiar with, but DL still has quite a few destinations left.

Delta currently serves 40 cities from DFW making DFW about the size of SLC. The 40 cities they serve are NOT counting the ASA feeder service. I definitely agree that DAL should follow in CAL's footsteps and add small to regional jet service to the Mexico market and add some larger aircraft to cities like Acapulco, Puerto Vallarta, Cozumel, Cancun, and San Jose. The location of DFW has alot of potential to be a large international hub, serving international flights to Mexico, South America, and Latin America. I think that is DAL's first step into building DFW up again. About Asia, DAL serves Nagoya and Tokyo in Asia from PDX, the M11 crew base, and Mumbai (india) from Frankfurt. They also service Tokyo from LAX. I dont really think DAL wants to get big in Asia, I think they want to use their 3 Eastern hubs: ATL, CVG, JFK to add more service to Europe.

No, I am not an ex- Pan Am employee, I do though have many older and well respected friends that are. I made up this user name the day after I toured one of Pan Am III's 727's. I do though really like Pan Am.

What is happening to DL is similar to what happened to CO in DEN with UA. Of course CO was in no way able to defend it's self at that time.
