I have to fly to LA...did the Orbitz search and ATA came up as the lowest fare. Never have flown with them but can't get past the idea that they're a second class airline. Don't know why I get a rat's behind...not like I'm flying Business...plus ATA has those new 738 with winglets (757 on other legs of the trip). Okay, I'm a snob...someone convince me ATA is a good airline. Anyone with ATA experiences?
Thanks to all who reply.

First off where do you get the idea that ATA is a "second class airline " ?? Southwest, Jetblue and several others are considered "low fare " carriers but that does not make them Second Class.

ATA has the Youngest fleet in the industry, 737-800s and 757-300's) all leather interior with adjustable wingback headrests and drop down video screens on all of their new aircraft.

737's are all equppied with new Cockpit doors that are bulletproof and can withstand 1500 pounds of pressure ( 757's are next to be fitted) no one "peeking " there head through the bottom of the doors on these aircraft!!

ATA offers pre-reserved seating, assigned seating, self ckeck-in kisosks ( MDW and IND )

ATA's HUB MDW will open it's new gates and customs facility by the end of the month.

ATA also has one of the best safety records in the industry , something we are very proud of.

New aircraft ( which equals better on time % ), New hub facility , great saftey record.....we are an airline on the rise !

Give us a try  Smile

ATA's not second class - just cheap. Lousy service, tight seating, MDW stinks (literally!) ... new planes, but don't expect your flight to be on time. Their technical reliability might be good, but they're late for every other reason.

Last time I flew on ATA I was on a L1011 going from IND-MCO first the Cargo Door Wouldn't Close (1 hour delay) then the Engine wouldn't start (half hour Delay) But The Pilot Let me stay in the Flight Deck until Pushback! He even let me sit in the F/O's Seat!  Big thumbs up. I Learned alot about the 1011 that day. but overall I'd fly on ATA Again Especially on their New 738s and 753s!

Flew them MSP-MDW-LAX return once.
ONCE.
Go to the airport and check out your prospective fellow passengers at the check-in counter. Don't do it!

Is there really that much difference between ATA and, say, Delta for example?

Very true comments regarding ATA's PAST reliabilty flying with the oldest fleet ( next to northwests) and also the OLD MDW terminal.

However, ATA has been rapidly re-fleeting and the NEW MDW terminal will be complete ( with new gates) on February 19th.

As far as judging an airline by who happens to be in line that day at the ticket counters is ridiculous in my opinion.

ATA is spending a great deal of money ( aircraft and terminal improvemnets) and the results have been very good so far.

as far as bringing a sandwich .......is the sandwhich worth the extra $100-200 dollars spent on a meal service flight ?

Did ATA have problems with On time performance and cramped HUB ? Yes!

Is it changing ? Yes it is....quickly.

Off the subject. So the new ATA concorse is going to open on Feb 19? The whole terminal is not going to be done for a while. I flew through MDW last weekend and it looked like they are about done with that concorse. The jet bridges are all in and have their ATA logos on them. Do you know if it will be open for viewing before the 19th. I am flying through MDW on Friday and returning Monday (WN of course). It would be good to see it from the inside.

Last night in LAS on a ATA charter flight, they denied boarding to a drunk male passenger. His wife went beserk when she found out the next flight left on thursday.
what did she do ?
She punched a female gate agent in the jaw and pulled her airport Id off her neck. She proceeded to hit and scratch another agent as well.
The police and National guard were at the gate in a flash.
This woman then proceeded to assault the Police and Guard.
The police subdued her and then the husband started to attack the cop. The Guard pulled him off the cop.
This couple are in the Marine corp and knew self defense.
But Behaviour like this at ATA is not unusual.
ATA passengers seem to have a very low tolerance and are quick to argue and assault.

Hello Fly ATA

In 20 years in this business, I have never seen a couple
like this . ATA's scheduled service is more subdued then the charter flights though.
actually, in our Terminal we really dont have that many drunks as you would think .

I do not think this is a reflection of ATA as much as it is air travel in general these days.Southwest passengers ended up killing a man trying to subdue him onboard, The guy kicking in the cockpit door then sticking his head inside only to be greeted by an ax handle etc. etc.etc. .

I watched 6 police officers try and subdue a man in the concourse after it was found out he was in the states Illegally( prior to sept. 11th). Was it ATA ...no.Was it a major carrier..yes. Im sure every airline could write a book on their experiences with "testy" travellers.

I have flown ATA and I've never had any major troubles with them. Out of my 4 flights with them only 2 were delayed. And about trashy passengers, you see that at every airline.

Nobody seems to have addressed Hoffa's question: What is the difference between ATA and coach class service on any other airline? My opinion, not much, if any.

What good does 5 star first class service if you're flying on the lowest fare? Unless you want make up a story about the imagined first class service and talk loudly at the baggage claim. You might get an inch less seat pitch on ATA, but most likely it'll be the same as a Delta or UAL seat. You won't get any meal to speak of on either flight. My guess - outside of the airlines logo on napkins, you won't be able to tell much difference between ATA and any other airline. If low fares alone were the criteria for "second rate", I'd gladly save a few bucks on the plane ride.

I was on standby from HNL to SFO with ATA waiting for their flight. the flight attendants came out for a "coffee", ive never seen a more badly groomed bunch of scraggy FAs in my life. I know they are basically a charter but gees. they could at least straighten thier ties. tuck in their shirts and brush their hair. they looked as though they had been through a wind tunnel for 24 hours straight. Thier boarding was a shamble as well. Very unprofessional all round. Pity Jetblue dont fly to HNL.

Hello,
Who cares? Just be glad that you can afford a flight, you could be stuck having to take a bus......................
They cant be that bad or they probably would not still be flying. The USA wouldnt allow you to be shoved in a metal container, with good benches no seat belts and no food for 8 hours.  Smile lol well probably not................
