I have a question. all or most of us always fly coach class. can you ask a flight att. or a gate agent if they can upgrade you? without the miles? becasue on the united airlines homepage when you go to make reservations there is a little section that says upgrade request. i am just curious as to what the airlines would say if you asked them for an upgrade on their flight. have you ever been in this situation. of course on a full overbooked flight i dont expect them to put me in first class. but maybe on a half empty flight.

I tried the Upgrade Request section of the United homepage and it immediately said none of my upcoming flights qualify for an upgrade. How does one qualify?

I did it on Virgin. I ask the FA if I could try the new comfortable seats in first class as I would like to see why people pay so much more for them. She said OK if I was good. We went up and ast down she said that she will come and get you in a hour or so. About 3 hours later we landed at LAX and I thank her and left.
I tried this with AA they said they had to ask the captain. So I said to the FA I would pay $1 for the upgrade. The Capt. said I could use the First class bathroom for that. so I sat in my seat and ask for another 7-up!

There is always a "slight" chance you will find a good F/A who will allow you to move up once the flight has departed. However, almost every request for an upgrade without using your miles will be met with a kind: Are You Joking?
The main reason for this strict policy is twofold. First, the passengers who are flying first and business class paid 4-5 times the amount someone pays for a coach ticket and the resentment is high. Second, If they do it for you, they must do it for the next guy, and the next guy and the next. Another way to use your mileage privelages in coach is available too. American for example, if you have enough miles with AA and you buy a coach seat, they will block the seat next to you so you have more room to be comfortable. Most people dont even realize this policy exists. You lose no miles and you are a heck of alot more comfortable.

I have been put it the first class section one. It was a six am flight out of Spokane WA. to SEA on Alaska. It was the first week after Cristmas 95 and the MD-80 was running really full. The coach section apparently filled up. So the put me in the first class section. Row one, Seat A and B was unocupied. The scary part about this story is the fact that I was non-reving as an employee of another airline at the time and I was the only person moved from the back to the front. Anybody else who works for the airlines will vouch that that is very rare, if it happens at all.

The two things that stuck out in my mind where how quiet the airplane was way up there in the front and the fact that the flight attended went around the cabin asking if anybody, "cared for something before takeoff." I asked for an OJ and it was in a real GLASS!!!!!

I haven’t seen an empty First Class seat on a Delta flight in a long, long time. There is always a waiting list for the upgrades based on a coupon system that Delta uses with Frequent Flyers.

The higher your status in the FF program the better your chance of getting the upgrade. I am Gold Medallion with Delta (mid level) and I get the upgrade about 50% of the time.

Maybe this is for the best, but if you are part of the milage plus program for that airline you have better chances, especcialy when you are like Premier or something. Anyway, you don't have a good chance unles there are empty seast. And usually people ARE called upon to do this. Like when there are standby's and there is a first clas seat, they'll bump you up and put the standby in coach!

On American, if you are a Gold AAdvantage member or higher, you can request an upgrade by using coupons within 24 hours before scheduled departure time but only on domestic flights.
