INDIANAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 19, 2002--Beginning today, ATA (American Trans Air, Inc.)(Nasdaq:AMTR - news) the nation's 10th largest carrier, will offer service from six new gates at Chicago-Midway Airport.

By March 8th, the low-cost carrier will utilize a total of seven new gates in the new A Concourse as operations are moved from gates in the old G and H Concourses. The new gates will handle almost 90 percent of ATA's departures, and are located immediately past security, the triangle concessions area and only steps away from the ATA ticket counter and the parking garage. The total number of gates operated by the carrier at Midway is nine.

``There is probably not an airport of this size that can match the convenience of the new gates and its proximity to parking and the new terminal,'' said Don Moonjian, ATA Vice President of Marketing. ``Business travelers will especially find our spacious new gates among the most convenient they have ever experienced, and over time, we believe that the new Midway Airport will become known as the most convenient airport of its size in any major metropolitan area.''

ATA is the first carrier to move an operation of this size into the new gates at Midway. Last October, the Company began transitioning its operations by moving into a spacious new gate in the airport's new B Concourse. By the time the Midway Airport development program is complete, the carrier will operate 13 new gates from the A and B Concourses combined.

Following the opening of the new gates, the new customs and immigration facilities at Midway will begin operation on March 1st. As previously announced, ATA has added international service to Aruba, Cancun and Grand Cayman, and on March 1st, will offer daily service (except Wednesdays) to Guadalajara, Mexico. These new international flights add value by expanding the availability of convenient, low-fare service for Chicago-area travelers from Midway Airport.

``ATA has evolved into a stronger, more value-focused airline,'' said Moonjian. ``We now offer more customer processing technologies such as self-service and curbside check-in that saves our passengers time further adding value to our service. You combine this with having the youngest scheduled service fleet among the major carriers, our low fares and convenient Midway Airport location -- all of this makes ATA an outstanding value.''

In addition to its gate expansion at Midway, the carrier today announced that its service operations has already reached its pre-September 11th flight schedule levels.

Now in its 29th year of operation, ATA is the nation's 10th largest carrier (based on revenue passenger miles). ATA offers significant scheduled service from Chicago-Midway and Indianapolis to 32 business and vacation destinations. As of February 10, 2002, the carrier has a fleet of 61 aircraft -- including 16 Boeing 737-800s, five Boeing 757-300s, 10 Boeing 727-200s, 16 Boeing 757-200s, 9 Lockheed L-1011-100s and five Lockheed L-1011-500s. Chicago Express Airlines, Inc. (operating as the ATA Connection), the wholly owned commuter airline based at Chicago-Midway Airport, operates 11 Saab-340Bs. Stock of the Company's parent company, Amtran, Inc., is traded on the NASDAQ stock market under the symbol ``AMTR.''
