Hey all, I just got a new DVD player, and want to start building up a nice collection of GOOD Airplane/Aviation themed movies.

So far I have:

Pushing Tin
Airport

Top Gun
---
What else should I add to the collection?

Air force one is a GOOD movie?
come on  Smile

Check out Spielberg's "The Langoliers" .. lots of L-1011 action + some fiction.

Flight of the Intruder
The original Memphis Belle documentary
The Battle of Britain

Man, I should really be able to think of a few more...

I have to veto Con Air and Air Force One though!

Cheers,
Fred

Mercy Mission: The Rescue of Flight 771!

Hah, did anyone see that other than me?

I like the main idea that he had to fly an old Piper Cub type plane from San Francisco to Sydney Australia, heh.

The Rescue of Flight 771 is my favourite aircraft movie. And a true story too. Can't find it in North America on either DVD or VHS so I'll have to continue watching my time-shift copy. Aircraft in the movie was some kind of Ag Truck crop sprayer.

Thanks so far for the suggestions...

I think I'll be getting Airplane! (along with Airplane! 2) next. I laugh every time I see those.

I also just bought The Right Stuff... I know it's not an "airplane" movie, but it has alot of great history about the test flights in the 50s (Chuck Yeager and stuff).

I saw Air Force One in the theatres... it was okay, but not something I would watch over and over. I also saw ConAir in the theatre... what a waste of money!

I'd rather have Air Force One than Pushing Tin. I was very dissatisfied when I saw that movie come on HBO....I had waited 6 weeks for that. Realism was only about 20% in my oopinion, as far as how they portrayed the Air Traffic Control system to work.

Heh.

How was The Rescue of Flight 771 a true story? I think they just made it seem that way.

A crop duster does not fly from San Fransisco to Sydney Australia..unless it runs on air.

For a change of pace, how about "The Great Waldo Pepper". It's all WWI aircraft, but it was all shot in flight, not in a studio. Great script, and lots of fun to watch. Good performances by Redford, Sarandon etc.

One smooth landing is skill. Two in a row is luck. Three in a row and someone is lying.

There's also Blackout, but that one makes Pushing Tin seem like a documentary. A good flick to watch none the less, every once in a while.

FredT:

I've never heard of that one.

I do know there's a novel called 'Blackout' by aviation writer John Nance; was it made into a movie?
