199* FOR 9 DAYS - DIRECT MELBOURNE-CAIRNS FLIGHTS
ROCKET TO THE REEF OR SHOP TILL YOU DROP

Virgin Blue today announced it will launch a direct seasonal Melbourne-Cairns service offering a non-stop Virgin Blue option between the Victorian business hub and one of Australia’s most popular holiday destinations.

From Friday 3 May 2002, flights will operate five days a week, excluding Tuesdays and Thursdays, representing a 343% increase in the number of seats available per week between the two cities.

As always, Virgin Blue is offering an amazing launch offer, with thousands of $199* one-way flights now up for grabs.

The flights can be booked from today until midnight Thursday March 7 (or until sold out) and are for every seat on every flight for travel between Friday 3 May and Sunday 9 June 2002.

The new direct service and great launch offer gives Melbournians the perfect excuse to head north to one of the Seven Wonders of the World - The Great Barrier Reef - and the tropical northern region.

North Queenslanders will also enjoy Virgin Blue’s new direct link to the hustle and bustle of Melbourne, bringing the delights of the Southern region within affordable reach for more and more people.

David Huttner, Virgin Blue’s Head of Commercial says, “Virgin Blue is committed to keeping the air fair by providing affordable travel across the entire country. The strong forward bookings already experienced on our connecting flights between Melbourne and Cairns have convinced us to offer this convenient hub-buster service.”

He continued, “Our late evening direct flights help travellers make the most of their free time. Holiday makers can spend the evening dining in tropical Cairns or trendy Melbourne and get back in time for work the next day, so it’s really the best of both worlds.”

Whether travellers are flying for business or pleasure, Virgin Blue’s new direct service will allow them to get the most out of their day and evening in either city.

The non-stop Melbourne-Cairns service is aimed at responding to market demand, further nurturing tourism and business opportunities for the two key destinations as well as expanding Virgin Blue’s route network out of both Melbourne and Cairns.

“It is a clear indication of our unwavering commitment to promoting tourism in our home state, as well as catering to the needs of travellers flying in and out of Melbourne, the busiest hub in our network”, finished David Huttner.

Depending on continuing support, Virgin Blue will also consider new destinations out of Cairns and Melbourne, as well as increased frequencies on existing services.

Everyday Melbourne-Cairns fares will start from $229.00* one-way, while Virgin Blue’s Fully Flexible fare between the two cities is $499.00*, with both fares 34% cheaper than the competition’s existing fares.

The new service also allows Virgin Blue to offer convenient connecting flights for the first time from Adelaide to Cairns, increasing the number of low fare destination options available from the South Australian capital, with fares starting from $299.00* one-way and a Fully Flexible one-way fare of $539.00*.

Is MEL really the busiest hub in the Virgin Blue network? What about BNE? I would have thought with all the routes that they fly out of BNE that it would be busier. Any figures for this?
