Record passenger growth has confirmed Hamilton
International Airport's status as the fastest growing airport in
Canada.
Passenger activity was up 128% in 2001, and continued to set records.
553,000 passengers used the Hamilton International Airport last year -
310,000 more passengers than passed through HIA terminal in 2000. Much
of Hamilton's growth is directly related to the expansion of WestJet
Airlines into eastern markets, and to Sunquest Tours, which introduced
a
winter charter program to Cuba and the Dominican Republic.
In 2000, WestJet chose the Hamilton International
Airport as the hub of its eastern Canadian operations. In 2001,
WestJet
added non-stop services between Hamilton and Calgary, Edmonton, Regina,
Saskatoon, Ottawa and Sudbury to their existing non-stop services to
Moncton, Winnipeg and Thunder Bay. They also increased frequency on
these established routes. "We are very pleased with these numbers,"
said John Gibson, vice-president of marketing for HIA. "They
demonstrate that we have been successful in positioning the Hamilton
International Airport as a convenient, low-cost alternative to Pearson
International Airport in Toronto."
Fast turnaround times at HIA are key to the airport's
success; WestJet is able to land, disembark passengers, take on new
passengers, and have planes back in the air in forty minutes -
forty-four percent faster than Pearson International Airport in
Toronto.

Skyrocketing passenger activity was supported by
increased aircraft activity at HIA. In 2001, 4237 flights landed and
departed the airport, a 30% increase from the 3254 passenger flights
that used Hamilton International Airport in 2000.
"When all Canadian airports have released their 2001
annual reports, we expect to see Hamilton International Airport
comfortably positioned among the top ten airports in Canada," said Tony
Battaglia, president of Tradeport International, the private company
which manages the Hamilton International Airport. In 2000, HIA was
Canada's 13th largest airport in terms of passenger traffic.

Records set in 2001 are unlikely to last; within the
next month, Tradeport International will be unveiling a multi-million
dollar expansion geared to accommodate the explosive growth of WestJet,
and the airport's other airline customers.

With the number will this help attract other airlines?

Where will you spend eternity? He,s more real then you think!!!!!

Wow that's explosive growth, but HIA said that "In 2000, HIA was Canada's 13th largest airport in terms of passenger traffic." This can't be true (yet, someday it will) b/c the thread about airport traffic, I found that YXE at around 800,000 pax is 13th. 553,000 puts YHM around the ranks of Thunder Bay and not too far behind Quebec City. But nonetheless incredible growth, but way down from the 900% growth in 2000 (hehe).

Hey, great news for YHM!

As YHM becomes more successful, it will attract more carriers such as AC Tango, transborder service (again) and perhaps a transatlantic service (again).

Neil

Panam, TWA, Ansett, Eastern.......AC next? Might be good for Canada.
