Delta MD-90s In Atlanta

I've been seeing Delta MD-90s in Atlanta lately, something we never used to see. Does anyone know what routes they're on? Do they have a common cockpit rating with the MD-88? Why didn't Delta proceed with the original order for over 100 and why do they bother to keep such a small fleet? Thanks.

yeah that does seem strange, I was under the impression they flew pretty exclusively left coast flights. How big is the fleet? 16 planes or something?

All MD-88 pilots I have talked to said most of the 90s come out of DFW.

I almost always get an MD-90 SLC-SAT, but also was on one DFW-DCA (pre-9/11).

It's a shame that DL didn't get more of them -- some of the most comfortable DL planes that I've been on: powerful, quiet, and a pleasure to fly...

The only complaint I have are the cheesy "Fasten Seat Belt When Seated" placards on the PSUs... obviously came from a handheld Tape Labeler...

The 90s are scheduled on legs into and out of DFW and SLC. There is no scheduled ATL MD-90 service. If you've seen one in ATL it was most likely an inbound ferry for a Heavy Maintenance Visit.

The order was canceled for several reasons. The first airplanes were maintenance headaches, and did not live up to airline expectations on fuel economy. They were originally ordered to replace 727's and their biggest advantage was a superior high and hot performance vis a vis the MD-88

DAL pilots say they love the MD-90's! Doug from jetcarrers said he likes them a lot better than the older MD-88's. More power, and advanced technology.

Sorry PatM04, no more MD90's out of PNS. The PNS-MSY-DFW route was axed after 9/11 and replaced with n/s PNS-DFW service on Skywest RJ's.

DL MD90's fly out of PBI (Palm Beach International - Florida) and FLL (Ft. Lauderdale) to DAL. I see them everyday.

The M90's are used in SLC, SNA, SAN, ONT, MCI, DFW, and ORD as far as I know. Delta used to fly them to Billings, MT, but not anymore. At least twice, the MD-90 I was to fly on was out of service for one reason or another. I heard that they have quite a few maintenance problems.

No doubt that the M90 is based in DFW, you can come at sometimes and see at least 6 of them their at a time.

I see them a lot at SNA. I believe they're used for the strict noise abatement policies in Orange County.
