Today, some jets that were headed to JFK today were asked to circle near Boston today and some chose Boston as an alternate due to (I believe) high winds/rain and turbulence in and around NYC..AerLingus 111 was one another was a jet that was extremely loud at takeoff this evening. The call sign was Ascot 2273 heavy and the tower reported that the plane was a Vycon 100...It looked like a Russian built plane and it had a British Pilot..
Can anyone help? What was it that I saw.
thanks
Mark Garfinkel

I believe "Ascot" is an RAF callsign and the aircraft was a Viscount VC-10(I'm really sketchy on this info). It has 4 engines mounted on the tail. It is a tanker and transport. It may have been here supporting the NATO AWACS aircraft.TC

Yes the VC-10 are tanks but I wasn't aware of us pulling in any to Boston for our 'Majic' bros helping with our D.C. caps, most of the NATO a/r's are being done with KC-135s THe two NATO support a/c (not Tankers) are parked here at Tinker AFB.

Logan Airport made them use RWY 15 even though the winds were 220 at 18 with higher gusts and + or - 10 knots wind shear at BOS. The departure RWY was 22right for everyone else....Probably made them use RWY15 for noise abatement.

Lt.--Yeah, the part about AWACS support was purely conjecture on my part. I see RAF Hercs at STL all the time. I have seen a VC-10 when the T-45 was being developed and they were also shopping for F-18's.TC

.....Or RWY 15 maybe for length of that RWY....That is Boston's longest RWY. That old beast probably needed a longer rwy....

The Vickers VC10 was designed for shorter runways that its contemporary's like the 707 but when the 707 was introduced many airports had runway extensions to allow for it. It was also designed for 'hot and high' destinations such as india, asia, middle east etc
