Taipei, March 4 (Bloomberg) -- EVA Airways plans to cancel its order of long-range versions of the Boeing 777 jetliners worth as much as $3 billion as Taiwan's second-largest airline opts to expand routes closer to home.

The airline is "finalizing a plan to cancel the Boeing 777 orders'' as the versions on order have higher operating costs on short-range routes than other planes being considered, EVA's Chairman Yu Chong-ho said in an interview.

EVA, along with other Asian carriers, has shifted its market focus more to regional traffic after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks dented demand for trans-Pacific flights. That change prompted the airline to re-examine its decision in June 2000 to order three 777-200LR and four 777-300ER jetliners, with options for eight more 777s.

EVA has been the only customer to date for the 777-200LR, said Hong Kong-based Boeing spokesman Mark Hooper. He declined to comment on the airline's plans.

"EVA's more profitable routes are Hong Kong and Japan, so we wouldn't really have good use for Boeing 777s,'' Yu said.

Yu declined to confirm that EVA may instead order planes from rival Airbus SAS, which in January 2001 broke Boeing's monopoly on aircraft sales to the carrier.

"We can cancel the order first and order new jets later, after our evaluation,'' Yu said.

"There are potential opportunities for Airbus, which last year got our first sales with EVA,'' said Tony Phillips, Airbus's Singapore-based spokesman. "Taiwan is an important market for Airbus.''

EVA expects to return to profit this year, betting travel will rebound worldwide and the island's economy will recover from its worst full-year recession on record, Yu said.

EVA Air slumped to a loss of NT$3.1 billion ($88 million) in 2001 as slowing economies and fears of terrorism curtailed air travel and cargo demand.

Taiwan exports, many of which are transported by air, fell 17 percent last year as demand for computer chips and other electronic goods withered. EVA has the highest exposure to cargo traffic of all Asia's major airlines, analysts said.

The 772LR is just as dead as the 764ERX and the 747X.

Funny, EVA had once ordered the A340-500 and then cancelled it in favor of the 777. EVA doesn't seem to be able to make up its mind.

Exactly 757300 LOL.The other week they released a press release saying how they saw the 773ER as replacing the 744 and their long term long haul plane..

TAIPEI -(Dow Jones)- EVA Airways Corp. (Q.EAW) denied Monday it may cancel an aircraft purchasing deal worth $3 billion with U.S. -based Boeing Co. (NYSE: BA - news) (BA).

Nieh Kuo-wei, spokesman of the No. 2 airline in Taiwan , said its deal with Boeing, signed two years ago, remains effective. Nieh was responding to a media report saying Boeing may lose the deal.

The package includes firm orders of seven B777 long-range passenger aircraft scheduled for delivery starting 2005 and options to buy or lease eight other units remain effective, said Nieh....

Which one is accurate? At this point, it doesn't appear that they even know.

However, if the first story is true, then it means that the A340NG's are out as well, and the new order would instead be (probably) for more A330-200s or other 777 models (quite possibly the -300) instead.

EVA WILL go ahead with the 777 deliveries. EVA has announced that it'll retire all of it's 747 (excluding freighter) around 2005/2006. The replacement will be either A340 or B777. but since 777 is ordered already, they'll replacing the 747.

EVA has no official announcement for Brussels flight. But the Taiwanese newspaper has reported that Brussels will join EVA's destination network this summer.

Actually both report were correct. Taiwanese government is using this as a bait to put pressure on US to deliver Aegis-class destroyer as well as TMD to Taiwan.

Unknown to people in this board that another news broke yesterday that US. may approve a conditional sales of Aegis Destroyer to taiwan.

It looks like EVA will go full out on boeing 777. Which now begs the question with A330 as an odd ball, what will they do with route to hong kong and within Asia.

Airbus A330/A340 fits EVA's business plan much better. As the 1st report is correct that 777 is too heavy to operates the short flight to Hong Kong efficiently.
