I'm wondering what SJC was like about 10 years ago. When terminal A opened in 1990, what were the airlines that opened that terminal and where were they in that terminal? What airlines use to serve SJC that don't anymore? Any past info is appreciated...

When Terminal A was in the planning stages, it was designed for PSA and Air Cal. Of couse PSA became US Air and Air Cal became American. US Air had the gates where Southwest is now and the others were American. When it first opened, it was only gates A1-A9. The rest of the gates were added later when AA started their SJC hub operation.

also, down in terminal C TWA brought in a 767 on a regular basis.

American served Lake Tahoe. BAE 146s were common place.

also on a side note, rumor has it that America West was suppose to run a "focal city" in SJC, take over the unused American gates and act as a feeder to American. Then American struck up the deal with Reno Air instead.

Also back in the old days you could fly SJC-SFO on a TWA 707! The flights started out in SFO in the morning, flew to SJC and then I think on to JFK. In the evening it came back to SJC, and then onto SFO.

Also I believe Air West had some flights from SJC to OAK with DC9's.

Some of the other airlines at SJC over the years

Aspen
Canadian Regional
Golden Gate
Golden West
Golden Pacific
Trans Sierra
Valley Airlines
Western Pacific
Morris Air
SFO Helicopter
Swift Aire
West Air
Hawaiian
Air West
Hughes Air West
Sun World
Pacific Coast
Apollo Airways
Pacific Skyway
Pacific Airlines
Reno Air
Reno Air Express
Holiday Airlines
+++ many more

Ah yes the good old days. At home I have an SJC timetable from 1970 or 1971. If anyone is interested I will scan it. It is very interesting.

Yes, please scan that timetable! Which terminal did Western Pacific operate out of?

West Pac operated out of Terminal C. Very few airlines have operated out of Terminal A:

American
American Eagle
Reno Air / Reno Air Express
Canadian Regional
US Air
Southwest
Morris Air

Richard,

Was that UAL DC-10 a scheduled flight? I've noticed that SJC gets its share of unusual visitors.

Incidentally, it's a shame that you haven't been uploading much to the site of late; is the spotting situation at SFO still terrible?

That UAL DC10 was a SJC-HNL flight that UAL operated for awhile.

Yes I have not uploaded much in recent months. There are several factors. One is that yes the situation at SFO is still terrible for photos. Currently I have one spot that can be used for photos only during the morning hours and only for planes departing on 1R. The other problem is that my father-in-law is dying of cancer and our family has been spending a lot of time dealing with that since the end of November. Right now I have trips on hold to LAX and LAS. I hope to get to both of them before the end of April, but right now I cannot go anywhere until the family problems are over.

Thanks for the interest in my photos

Richard-Sorry to hear about your news. Wish you the best...

Thanks for all the help, San Jose is my home town and that airport has always been sorta looked over! I'd like to see some expansion happen there soon. Thanks again!

What's the current situation concerning long-hauls out of SJC? About a year ago AA operated LHR, CDG and NRT out of San Jose, right? Have those flights been cut? What's the look out? Thanks!

The pre-September longhaul nonstops were Tokyo, Taipei and Paris-- no London. The Tokyo remains.

Last year AA added TPE and CDG (not LHR) flights from SJC. Those flights were dropped after 9/11. The SJC-NRT flight still operates daily with a 777.

Here is the SJC schedule from May of 71.

Richard, sorry to hear about your father-in-law.

Reminds me of my days at ONT in the late 70's: I worked for PSA as part of a high-school career vocational training program. Those of us in the "Airline Careers" program were given the choice of working with PSA, Air Cal, Western, Golden West, or Hughes Air West. Ah, the good ole days!!!

Thanks for the above memories.

Sort of surprising that in 10/65 SJC had no jet service and no nonstops out of the state.

In the 15 Oct 1965 OAG I count 17 weekday departures out of SJC, all Pacific M404s or F27s: 2 to Paso Robles, 2 to Stockton, 2 to Fresno, 3 to Burbank, 1 to LAX and 7 to SFO.
