Its very simple. The aircraft would have needed another nose cone to replace the one it had on (possible damaged). The only one the had access to was probably the one it is now using. Airlines are not very picky about what there aircraft look like as long as it is making money. The photo below is another example of this.

The part in question is called a radome, and Delta has 3 varieties of radomes for the MD-11, one for each type of livery. DL had to use whichever one was available for replacement, and the oldest livery was the one available.
