As part of its June schedule additions, United will offer hourly service between Chicago and Dallas/Ft. Worth. There will be 15 flights each way.

This is the first time United has offered such service in this market. Prior to 9/11 only eight/nine flights were offered each way.

UA is going head to head with AA on DFW-ORD?

Wow!! So how many flights will this amount to by UA on this route, and what type of aircraft will be used?

I've flown on 9V-SPK.

They absolutely must be getting another gate, possibly more at DFW. If not, they certainly should.

There's always a wait stacked two planes deep throughout the day on the current gates.

UA isn't just going head to head with AA on DFW-ORD, they are surpassing thru *hourly* service. Most definitely AA will respond as it can't be outmatched in frequency between its #1 and #2 hubs!

Yes, more gates are in accord. I do believe UA is trying to acquire TW's old gates, as TW had a sizeable operation with an Ambassador's club.

...hourly service between ORD and DFW, MSP, etc makes little sense when cities like Houston and San Antonio lack nonstop service to the Washington-Dulles hub.

I wonder how long either AA or UA can stick to the hourly flights. Usually these pointless head-to-head fights end up both arilines losing $$$$$$$$ and after a couple of months one airline will retreat.

Anyone willing to take a bet who will win this battle. I put my money on AA.

Laurens

That's great news, I always hoped UA stepped up their DFW operation.

Actually, it makes a lot of sense for United to boost Chicago flights rather than add service from Houston and San Antonio to Dulles.

If United rebuilds, it must start with its largest hub. This is exactly why American has added 60 flights to DFW. Chicago is very competitive, and it is much more important to maintain a leadership position there than it is to add a few new spokes to Dulles where there is far less competition. That can be done at a later date.

I won't disagree that strenthening ORD for UA is important but the gains (IMHO) that United is going to make with hourly service is negligible at best.

I am glad to hear United is expanding. I hope to see someday that they will be a great airline making a profit.

Would UA use 777's for this?

Chris

UA is not expanding. These 77 additional ORD flights are coming at the expense of other flights in and around UA's route system.

Is their that much demand for ORD from DFW to justify that many flights, not including all of those operated by AA. Although DL doenst have any connecting traffic in ORD what if they decided to reinstate DFW to ORD it would be to much competition with a lower demand.

Do you know what types of aircraft will be on the route?

Maybe a few 757s instead of the normal 737s and Airbuses?

I think this is good and all, but there are probably too many flights on the route as it currently is. Maybe 4-5 flights, but not 15!!

Before we know it, United will be the number 2 airline at DFW at this rate.

I checked the schedule, and it looks like a mix of 737-300, 737-500, A320 and A319.

Also, with the new schedule United will reach a new high in departures at DFW -- 34. They are:

Chicago - 15
Denver - 11
Los Angeles - 3
Washington - 3
San Francisco - 2
