Hello,

I read that United Airlines will launch a flight from Los Angeles to Buenos Aires on September 1, 2000 if they get approved by the DoT.

United Airlines is meeting troubles on Latin America. Their major concern is the hub. American has DFW and MIA, Continental has IAH, and Delta has ATL (even if it's not a very popular airport to Latin America). They tried to extand out of MIA, but American is too strong there. So they tried ORD, but the market is too weak out of there.

So why wouldn't they make LAX into a true hub to Latin America ?

UAL has already begun to feed its hub for Pacific and Atlantic services, and so it would be easy to feed flights to Latin America as well. Plus LA has great "local" market for flights to that continent.

Denver could be quite well located, with more convenient connection for the North of USA. But it is way a smaller market to Latin America than LAX.

What do you think ?

BTW, since when is America Airlines string at Miami and on Latin America ?

Lately, the growth of United's "hub" at LAX has been largely domestic. There was a significant change in Shuttle (starting service to Medford, Santa Rosa, Santa Barbara, and San Diego - the latter two new to Shuttle, but not mainline United) and the addition of the longer flights. There have been some international additions and the aforementioned potential Buenos Aires route and I definitely think we'll see more.. perhaps they'll try to build Pacific operations from SFO and South Pacific and South American operations from LAX, with a few major European routes from both. Personally, I think the word hub is used loosely in this case.. sure they have a lot of flights to a lot of places, but there can't be enough pure transfer traffic to be considered a true hub (a la ORD or DEN).

I'd love to fly to South America more out of LAX. I end up going through Miami (when I'm on the west coast). It could be a matter of aircraft...do they have the equipment to expand the number of flights to South America? It could also be a matter of congestion at LAX. Can United get the slots to expand its hub? The city is desperately trying to find a way to expand it over local opposition and the region is "looking" for another airport location.

Ok, I'll get off my pedestal now..

I don't think LAX is slot-controlled.. in fact I'm pretty sure of it. And I don't think United has much to complain about access-wise, what with the 90-something flights a day between LAX and SFO.
