Miami NBC affiliate is reporting a commercial plane is down in Cuba, heading from Cienfuegos to a small Cuban resort town. 17 confirmed dead. No word on aircraft or airline, but they said it was "a Cuban state airline" (so I'm assuming Cubana?).

May they rest in peace, I can't blame the airline for operating such an old aircrfat because they do what they can with the resources they have. Lots of these Russian planes in Cuba are improperly maintained and as a result accidents happen.

People sometimes get the wrong idea about airlines in Cuba. After chatting with an engineer who works at Jose Marti, a lot of stereotypes were broken down. The Cuban Government is encouraging tourism, and as a result most Cuban aircraft are maintained to the highest standards (much like North Korea's Air Koryo aircraft are).
Aerotaxi is responsible for shuttling foreign tourists between the various international resorts in Cuba, and as such, are hardly going to let their maintenance be non-existent.

Superfly
Air Koryo is one of the world's safest airlines. Because the airline is the showcase of the DPRK, the government in FNJ spends a shitload of money keep the fleet of Tu-154, Tu-134, Il-62 and even Il-18 and An-24s very well maintained. The last thing the DPRK gov't wants is bad publicity in that foreigners are killed on their aircraft because of bad maintenance.
