UA 747-400 At Ewr?

Does anyone know why there is a United 747-400 in their MX hanger in EWR? It's about 2:20pm at it just sitting on the ramp. Last I checked UA doesn't fly the 747 into EWR. Any info would be great!

I flew into EWR yesterday morning and taxiied right by an AF concorde that diverted from JFK. I also noticed the United 747-400 sitting on the ramp and wondered why it was there. My guess would be that it too diverted due to the weather, but I'm not really sure.

JFK has had alot of delays due to fog the last few weeks, I assume these latest sightings are along those lines.

Sitting on the water (Jamaica bay) like it does, and being so close to the open Atlantic it tends to have much different weather than LGA (which sits on Flushing bay) or Newark which sits on Newark Bay.

The 747-400 in Newark operated a charter for the St. Patrick's Day parade. It will be departing after the festivities in NYC. I thought it was strange that the airplane had such a long stay in EWR (4 days I think). Even though I haven't worked there in years, I still check back with the old station to see what's happening there.

where was the charter coming from, ireland? why was united chosen as the charter? and lastly why did it go to newark, rather than jfk?

I too saw the UAL 744 parked at the UA Hangar this afternoon when I passed by around 4PM. I had to do a double take. First time I have seen a UA 747 here. I'll have to go check it out when I go to work tonight.

Yes, Hangar 14. On top of the hangar, as a matter of fact, is EWR's rotating beacon.

what do they use the hangar for, i know ewr has a good amount of flts to UA hub cities, but that is about it.

Hangar 14 is used for overnight checks. When I worked there EWR performed A and B checks on 727s and 757s. It's also used for any special repairs that come about. Built in the mid 1950's, it can completely house 2 727s (or smaller aircraft). One 757 can fit in with the tail sticking out the back. Anything larger than a 757 can not be accomadated.

A UA 744 did a scheduled pax run last fall - either Thanksgiving or Xmas due to seasonal demand. It's rare, but every once in a blue moon EWR will be graced with one.
