A Week In The Life Of A Delta 777

Delta has eight 777-200s, of which I believe six are currently in service. The cities regularly served by the 777 include ATL, CVG, MCO, LGW, CDG, MAN. I don't believe I'm leaving anything out, although airliners.net has also caught Delta 777s at JFK, TPA, DUB, FLL, . This surprised me, but Flight Explorer only shows ONE of them airborne right now (Flight 64 ATL-MAN). I would have thought there would be more of them flying right now. Oops, this aircraft now just disappeared off the Flight Explorer display halfway across the Atlantic Ocean, so perhaps this is when we lose coverage, and there must be some other DL777s closer to Europe that I can't track (either on the way there or on the way back).

Anyway, do each of the aircraft follow the same schedule, or does each aircraft go back and forth between a certain city pair, or are they assigned on a highly variable basis? If I were to pick one, or more of these aircraft to track for a week or so, would that aircraft visit all of the cities I mentioned above? What would be a typical weekly run for ship 7002? How about 7006?

BTW, is 7002 still stuck in South Africa, or did they finally fly it back?

Ship 7001 did LGW-ATL today and is doing a CDG turn tonight.

Ship 7002 is on a CVG-CDG turn at the moment.

Ship 7003 is just out of scheduled maintenance in ATL and flights haven't been loaded yet for this bird.

Ship 7004 is in scheduled maintenance in ATL.

Ship 7005 is in her maintenance visit in ATL tonight and will do the morning MCO turn in the morning followed by DL64 to MAN and back to ATL.

Ship 7006 is operating the ATL-LGW-ATL turn tonight and will do CDG tomorrow.

Ship 7007 is the bird you saw on Flight Explorer. MAN turns today and MCO tomorrow followed by line maintenance overnight in ATL.

Ship 7008 is in revenue service prep and won't be flying the line for awhile.

According to the Delta timetable March 16 was the last day of the 777 service frpm CVG to CDG, it is being replaced by the 763 which I beleive takes the 777 out of CVG altogether.

You're going by the printed timetable issued in December 2001, right? According to it, the 777 from CVG-CDG becomes a 763 on March 17, but according to the latest online timetable, they're keeping the 777 on that route all summer. Hope this helps!

Notdownnlocked, I don't think aircraft routings would be considered sensitive corporate info. Any person who walks down E Concourse in the afternoon can tell where an aircraft is going or coming from. The E Concourse Crown Room even lists ship numbers on its flight information displays. And any travel agent with access to Worldspan can take a look and see where Delta's birds are and where they're going.

I just flew ATL-MCI saturday, and in DL onboard magazine saw flight to Venice on the map. I am very interested in that flight. Where is it from and what kind of bird operates it?

Pretty much. Deltamatic and DeltaNet give us a wealth of information, a lot of it proprietary. I don't usually post detailed info like that but thought it might be of interest to all the Delta fans out there.

When is ship 7008 due to enter service please?

Ship 7008 is still undergoing revenue service preparation at the Technical Operations Center in ATL. She's not scheduled to be finished with that until the 22nd of March. So my assumption would be that 23 March would be the likely service entry.

Can you tell me which one will fly as DL029 from CDG-ATL on June 10, 2002? That's my flight back from Paris.

Delta doesn't yet know which airplane they're going to run on that date. It's too far out into the future. Flights are loaded for up to 3 or 4 days into the future for shorthaul aircraft and generally 2 days out for the longhaul birds like the 777s. They change frequently based on flight cancellations, irregular operations, and aircraft availability.

I don't think East Coast to Europe flights utilize the 777's amazing capabilities. We have to be patient and wait for Delta to fit the fleet with the TIMCO crew rest areas. Then the birds will be legal for flights over twelve hours, and that's when we'll start to see some really impressive 777 flying.

Using the 777 on the ATL-MCO run is a question of making good use of available resources. Every night one 777 has an overnight line maintenance check on E Concourse. If the aircraft arrives from Europe in the early afternoon and isn't scheduled to leave Atlanta until the next evening, and line maintenance only needs to work on the bird during about a 10 hour span, Delta can put the bird to work. I realize that running a heavy 777ER on such a short route is not the most profitable enterprise, but Delta needs all the lift they can get into the Orlando market, and the 777 which would otherwise sit idle fits the bill for that perfectly.

I think once that happens expect DL to fly ATL-HNL non-stop with the 764ER and ATL-NRT non-stop on the 772ER. I don't know if I want to be cooped up in a 764ER for 10 hours, though....

The 777 crew rest mod is on hold until next winter season. We now have two completed. As for the 764, crew rest issues still have not been sorted out. The same mod as the 777 will not be installed. There isn't enough room in the plane's crown area.
