QF 738 Interior

Look at the QF 738 interior. Looks as though the seats are exactly the same as those in AA's 738's!

Although the center aisle does seem to be missing the TV monitors for IFE!

I believe that QF took over the 738 order from Boeing which AA had deferred. The two airlines have just signed a 10-year agreement which enables them to work towards fleet commonality, etc., as they are both oneworld members. They have also strengthened their codeshare ties, and FFs can now combine QF/AA flights just as they can with QF/BA flights without points penalties. The interiors look nice, although I believe that many of the a/c will have a one-class interior, and are to be used on routes where there isn't a big demand for J Class - generally routes where Virgin has a presence.

I dont really like the interiors they look quite dull, nothing special about them at all. And it certainly does not compliment Qantas' special livery and their proposed earthy coloured aboriginal branding.

Has Qantas retained the AA 'more room through coach' or has the seat pitch been tightened to a more traditional 31-32" ? While we're talking about Oz, I must say the Ansett interiors, with the three colours, were striking. Another reason I'll miss them.

Braniff place, I think the earthy colors and branding that you are referring to is for their new low-cost (full service) international subsidiary, which will use the former Australian Airlines brand, and fly initially from Cairns to Asian destinations not now served by QF. (By the way, your painting would look great in their terminal area, or as a mural inside the a/c!).
I suspect the seat pitch will be standard, and not the AA "more room" pitch (unfortunately),as most of the 738s will be used in an all-economy configuration competing on low premium routes against Virgin.

The IFE screens come down from the o/head lockers and the seats will be replaced at some stage with the standard QF seats like on the 763/744 (and some 734).

that is definitely, beyond the shadow of a doubt, an American interior. It's identical (except number of seats) to the AA MD-82 I flew last Saturday.

Wow, I knew AA had sold/leased them to Qantas, but I didn't expect it to be that obvious.

The reason for the American Airlines interior on this Qantas B737-800 is quite simple;

Aircraft interior configurations are normally fixed, and cannot be altered around 16 months before delivery, according to an article I have on aircraft interiors.

The B737-800 aircraft that Qantas is receiving were originally allocated to American Airlines to their specifications, the agreement for Qantas to take the aircraft was reached fairly late in the day, and so Qantas were obliged to take the aircraft with a full AA interior.

The First/Economy layout is incompatible with the Qantas domestic product, I believe they have convertible Business/Economy seats as found on most European carriers, don't they?

Under normal circumstances the aircraft would have been reconfigured with Qantas seating and interior branding before service entry, however giving the urgent need for capacity in the Australian domestic market following the final closure of Ansett the decision has obviously been made to carry out the reconfiguration at a later date.

The only concession appears to have been the removal of the partition between First and Economy class, as this is a pretty meaningless division for Qantas, and it can be very rapidly removed.

No doubt later deliveries will come with full Qantas interior. The B737-800 seatmap on the Qantas website shows all Economy seating anyway.

In the UK there are at least 3 examples of airlines having to reconfigure aircraft after delivery;

Air 2000 decided over a year before their first B767-300 was delivered they would operate it in a 2-class layout, but too late to have the aircraft delivered like that, it arrived in a Y325 layout and had to be reconfigured to C38Y274 before service entry.

bmi british midland realised when they announced the start of Trans-Atlantic services from Manchester, months before delivery, that the A330-200 as ordered had too great a proportion of Business seats, as it was originally intended to serve Heathrow. Again, too late to change it, and the aircraft were delivered and conducted their proving runs as ordered before being reconfigured to C24W48Y172 before entry into revenue service.

Virgin Atlantic's B747-400s that were originally ordered by Alitalia were delivered in a unique configuration, and have had to be subsequently have new seats and IFE systems fitted - some coming directly from B747-200s as they were phased out, so I've been told!

The QF 733's and 734's have 8 'real' business class seats (in 2 rows) and a few more rows of business/economy 'convertible' seating a la most European carriers. This is the result of originally having 733's and 734's in a 3 class configuration in the early 1990's! What the original post showed was a 738 interior with US style first class seats, ie non-convertible. The 762's and 763's have non-convertible seats, even those used exclusively on domestic runs.

QF have already flagged they will fit slimline seats (prob the ones found on the 763's and 744's) into the 738.
