B737-900 For Alitalia?

Yesterday, on my Alitalia flight from Rome to Turin, a Flight Attendant told me Alitalia is going to replace its MD82 fleet with a new type of planes he called 739 (?).
I assume that he ment 737-900, but it's the first time I hear Alitalia is going to buy this kind of plane.
Anyone has some more precise information about?

If this is true that means AZ goes for B737NG, but this seems very unlikely.
Also me in the past when I talked with AZ crew I always got wrong informations.

AZ short-medium haul fleet will go all Airbus.
Also a 70/90 regional jet will be bought.

Sorry to say: FORGET it. Alitalia has the A320 and A321, covering exactly this segment. Plus an order for 12 A319. Cancelling all these outstanding orders AND selling the A320/321 AND replacing them with a couple of B737NG orders is pure nonsense IMO. Not to speak about the financing aspect (B777 deliveries, A319/329 deliveries, upcoming 70-seater order, upcoming MD-8X replacement)... this are billions we´re talking about.

I don't think they'll be going for the 739s, as they already have the A320 & A321 as well as orders for A319. Why would they go for the 739?

I highly doubt that the flight attendand you mentioned knows something about the B739. He or she probably doesn't even know the difference from an A320 and a B737.....
As everybody else said, Alitalia is committed to the Airbus single aisle family.

Yes, he didn't look so sure of the things he was talking about...
I knew Alitalia has chosen Airbus, but since they have always been a loyal Boeing/McDonnel customer I feared they have changed their mind.
BTW: did they order anly 12 A319? Alitalia has a huge MD80 fleet to replace. Will they increase this order or will they choose a different Airbus model?

For the replacement of the huge MD-80 fleet Alitalia will probably proceed with repeated orders for A320s family aircraft.
They have already begun to sell some MD-80s (20 I think) and leased them back in order to dispose of them quickly as soon as new aircrfats are delivered.
The original order for 40 A321s was intended to replace the A300 on domestica and European routes but then it has been shelved into 23 A321s and 19 A320s.
Then again, after 6 A320s have been delivered, AZ converted 8 A320s in A319s and added 4 more orders for the latter (so that's the total of 12 A319) and turned the remaining 5 A320s to Eurofly.
With just 6 examples I think that the next big order will involve the A320, maybe a 25+25 frames, with the possibility to switch to another model.

As for the regional jet it is almost sure that they will get the Embraer170-100.

Probably they won't order any 100seater like the A318 or the B717, although recently Boeing held a conference in Italy trying to push some orders for the 717 among Italian airlines (remember that the entire fuselage is built by Alenia in Naples).

I don't know, maybe, but in my opinion he din't have an idea about a new plane by Dornier. He probably confused A319 with B739.
If I'd be a Flight Attendant I would know everything about my airline's fleet: past, present and future, but, not everybody shares the same hobbies!

Does anyone heard about the problems of overbooking policy of AZ??
It seems in the last months they always have a large number of overbooked pax on the evening flights from MXP and on some long haul routes.
I heard three week ago they had 78 overbooked pax on the MXP- Dakar operated with a 211 seats B763 and also on the same day 42 overbooked pax on the MXP-BRU operated with a 133 seats MDD-80.

Well, maybe these overbooking problems are a good thing: maybe people keep on flying again after the crisis.
But if it so, perhaps Alitalia doesn't have enough long haul planes to face passengers demand. Yes, they ordered the 777, but the 747 have been retired. So, right now, long haul fleet has: eight MD11 and eleven B767-300ER.
Do you think it's enough or ALitalia should increases its fleet?

With the summer season coming and the incresing number of pax after the 11 Sept. crisis, I think AZ hasn't enought long haul planes to satisfy the demand.
That's really a negative thing cause "foreign" (read: not Italian) airlines will take more advantage and AZ will lose again market share in its "home" market.

Maybe if AZ doesn't sell the charter division Eurofly before the summer, we could see some A330/200 flying on the AZ long haul networks.

Airblue, AZ has already decided to sell GJ before the summer season. If they're still getting the A332 and if Volare Group do the same, I see them as the fisrt candidate to buy the airline, and so AZ will look after other sources of long-haul a/c. Why can't they lease some?
If I remember right, the first A332 should be delivered between April/May... we're near...

About the topic:
NO WAY! But there's still the Md80 replacement problem... is AZ don't subscribe is short time the capital increase, how can they pay for new aircraft (starting from the 777)? Moreover, the trade union are opponing to the entrance of AF in AZ capital. The good news is that AF could "lend" some a/c to AZ. So I could see some long haul lended by AF to AZ at least for the summer season (maybe some A342 with mixed French/Italian pilots and Italian F/A).
