I want to know what your oppinions are on Airports that are thought to be unsafe or ones with challenging approaches. Should we close them down? If you have flown in to an airport in the carribean or san deigo, kai tak, fornebu, or New york la guardia tell me your experience and the plane/airline you were on.

Thanks!

I have been on a flight in and out of Fornebu... I don't see what makes it challenging, and I sure don't see why it would be dangerous. It was a Finnair DC-9-51 I was on by the way.

They just shut it down because of its position near the water and runway length.
They neaded more space and better lighting equitment in fog. Planes could go of the end of the runway and directly into the water.

I live in New York and have flown the LaGuardia approach many times. Of course it is fun to desend over the water untill you think you are going to be splashing down. However, there are similar situations at othere airports. While LGA might have short runways that is not something that I, as a passenger, can really get a feel for as we land.

Well, in GSO, there was this little tiny grass strip a few miles from my house. It only got about 1 operation about every few days. It had trees at one end, all along the sides, a house at the other end, and ditches all around the runway and some small ones in the runway.

Hi

Did you see my photo from Funchal airport? There the planes can also go of the end of the runway and directly into the water and 757's fly there.

See my post from yesterday about the airport at Dutch Habor AK.

Also I would submit the following airports

Sand Point AK-SDP
Adak Naval Air Station-AKD
Juneau AK-JNU
Ketchikan Alaska-KET
Sitka Alaska has its points too

Most of these aiports the danger comes in terrain and weather considerations.

For some good dangerous aiport images I suggest visit www.firebirds.org and look at their photo page. The Fairbanks FSDO has some on-line images on their site. I have a link that will bring you directly to that page at www.aero.und.edu/~shmiller/alaska_flying.html.

Milotoo,
You are wrong about FBU. The main reason that they shut down the airport was economic. I have a friend who has worked for SAS there for 10+ years. There simply was not enough room to expand. For a 'modern' city this airport was archaic. There were only about 8-10 jetways to planes, everyone else flying domestically on Braathens or SAS had to walk outside into the nasty Norwegian winters. The runway was too short to provide for effective international flights. You couldn't get a fully loaded 747 or MD-11 out of FBU. Gardermoen was used for many years in a joint military / civilian role because the runway was long enough to handle charters and cargo flights from all over the world. FBU was a very safe airport. The water had nothing to do with it. If you would like more info on this E-mail me personally.

Cheers,
Markus

I don't think they should closse them down as I think airline pilots enjoy the tuff approach. Also accidents don't happen that much at airports so they can not be that bad!

i was on a delta L-10, going to LaGuardia, all was fine we were right on apreach when all of a sudden the engines roard back up and the plane swerved right over the terminal and aborted landing. then the pilot tried landing again and aborted a second time! the first time he said he ran out of room on the runway to land and the second time he said that another flight was lanidng right when we were. Anyway what i think , laGuardia i a really small airport! , far too small for an L-10 to land on!
