NW 744 MSP To DTW

Tonight at around 9:15pm when I was leaving DTW I saw a 747 coming in for a landing from a distance, I could tell it was a 747 by its lights. I rushed home and got on flightracker to see what it was and it said it was a NW 744 flying from MSP to DTW. Since when have they been using 744s on MSP to DTW runs?

I do know that a great deal of NWA 747 maintenance is performed at MSP rather than DTW. Why-I don't know.

Instead of flying an empty plane, they load it up and it takes the place of two 757 flights for the MSP-DTW route.

A 747 hanger will be built soon in DTW along side the DC10 hanger. But to answer your question... the launch flight of the newest 744 ship 6316 is tomorrow from DTW-AMS-BOM as flight 68. Perhaps it is done with the christening formalities and receiving formalities and they're ferrying it to DTW to ready it for its first revenue flight. Either that or a maint repo or a diversion making it to its final destination.

In March 1993 I flew a regularly scheduled NW 744 between DTW and MSP. There were so few coach pax on board that we were all put in the business class cabin!

Another gripe about Northwest; why the hell don't they move their corporate HQ to Detroit (or at least the glamorous Romulus). Why on earth would anyone want to fly from Detroit to Bombay?

What are you talking about? How does the location of NW's WHQ affect you, or anyone else flying on the airline, which you have mentioned you never will do?

Second, what does flying DTW-BOM (which is now called Mumbai, NOT Bombay) have to do with the location of NW's HQ?

NW seems to be doing just fine despite the fact that their HQ is not in the same location of their largest hub, which has been considered the standard by which all new airports will be judged.

Don't look for NW to move their corporate HQ to Detroit. Politically, it ain't gonna happen. Remember back in the early '90's when the State of Minnesota bailed NW's ass out?? Well, the State of Minnesota does, and it won't EVER let NW forget it.

DTW may be NW's biggest hub, but not by much. MSP is only slightly smaller than DTW's operations... true, the new WorldGateway will allow NW to grow much larger there, but the 3.1 billion expansion/remodeling at MSP and the new north-south runway will also allow growth as well.

TWFIrst is right, back a few years ago when NW was going down the toilet, Minnesota bailed them out big time. Plus, there are other reasons I read the stay in MSP. I read a article in the Wall Street Journal about it.
Plus, even though people rave abou the New DTW 1.2 billion terminal, well remeber, over the last 15 years, NW has put Nearly 7 billion into MSP, that was probably the reason it go rated the best airport in north america by the IATA and Travel and Liesure. Plus, NWA has a huge stronghold on MSP, almost monopolistic. Anytime a new airline tries compeating, the kill it (sun Country). Every wonder why BA, LH and AF don't fly into MSP? Or why now that BMI applied to fly here, it is having so much trouble geting in? It has nothing to do with the market here, theres plenty.
Also, DTW is just slightly larger than MSP. MSP beat it out in Pax or movements, i don't remeber which one.

This is true, but MSP is already losing some flying to DTW. Their 2nd NRT is going to us and NW has already applied for several nonstop international (Europe and Asia) routes from DTW. This is not, in any way, to say that NW plans or is thinking about leaving or down-grading MSP, but they have definite plans, stated in internal publications of expanding the DTW hub into their biggest.

I believe that NW is trying to make their hub facilities the best in the world. The additional runways in DTW and MSP as well as the new terminal in DTW and the billions of dollars in rennovations at MSP show that they are trying to improve the customer experience.

Now, let's fix MEM!

I'm not sure about the US-India market, but Europe to India is currently a gold mine. The flights are just loaded and loaded and loaded. I guess NW is doing quite well on the DTW-AMS-MUM route since they have the 744 on it rather than the 742.

Which other carriers serve the US-India market?

Don't know about MEM [a second daily AMS would be nice].
But I would expect NW to concentrate international hubbing mainly at DTW. I mean, runway lay-out and capacity, and terminal capacity and conveniance are superior to the DL hub at ATL!!! I don't see why DTW shouldn't be as big as a hub for NW in 10 years time as ATL is right now for DL...

DTW Midfield Terminal is the best thing that happened to NW since the DC9 came out...

Yes, DTW will get more international flights as a result of the new airport, but I don't think that has any bearing on the location of NW's HQ... Delta flies a lot of it's international flights out of JFK, AA out of MIA and ORD, CO out of EWR, but their HQ aren't in those places.

The reason for the 2nd DTW-NRT is since DTW-PEK is being axed. Thus, feeding NRT-PEK. Beefing up the hub operation in NRT along with the introduction of the new A320 cities from NRT.

DTW-NRT was twice daily about a year or two ago. It wasn't last summer, but now it will be again. This has nothing to do with stealing flights from MSP.

NW is very happy out in Eagen. The 747 hanger in DTW has been temporarily put on the back-burner, but will happen in the future.

DTW-PEK was cut, obviously since it wasn't performing well. It made sense to feed traffic through NRT and better redistribute Trans-Pacific capacity.

Favre-Thanks, good to hear about that. Been hearing conflicting reports about that one. I knew the media made a big deal when they said they were postponing the project, yet they don't care about it when things are actually back on.

While DTW-PEK was always full, it just wasn't providing the revenue NW needed to justify those costs. The suspension is only temporary and with this there will be daily flights to PEK via NRT. Wingtip NRT fllights from DTW will allow NW to pack these planes and distribute through passengers to the other Asian cities... more $$$.

DTW-PEK is just cut for the summer, yes PEK will have to go through Narita now. I see the passenger lists at DTW, PEK flies an average of 405 people each time to DTW. Northwest is supposed to double international service this summer from what I understand, first flight arives from Nagoya at 9:30 instead of 10:30am
