I'm looking at the NEW Star Alliance timetable (4.1 -> 6.15) currently, and see this interesting schedule arrangement for Thai's AKL-BKK.

As you all know already, Thai is launching additional 3x MD-11 service for AKL-BKK, via BNE.

However, I find that the schedule is very interesting:

AUCKLAND NZ (AKL)
To Bangkok TH (BKK)

DEP ARR Flt# A/C Day Stops
1320 2240 TG984 M11 135 1
Effective 6/3
1345 2255 TG992 744 D 1

BANGKOK TH (BKK)
To Auckland NZ (AKL)

1745 1201+1 TG983 M11 247 1
Effective 6/2
1815 1230+1 TG991 744 D 1

The departure and arrival time are within 30 minutes, around the same time slots.

I thought the new flight would be a morning flight?

Any one know why Thai's arrival and departure time in AKL are within 30 minutes?

The MD11 flight is routed via Brisbane, a new service and the 744 flight is the existing flight via SYD. It was my understanding that frequency would be cut back on the flight via SYD to allow more service to MEL.

I agree, this is odd, and something tells me that the schedule is not correct.

It's indeed correct.. TG will not be cutting back on their TG991 service via SYD - they go out every day packed to the gills.

I guess they've determined that this slot is the best for pax in AKL, SYD, BNE, and BKK.

I've taken the TG992 flight many times, and it is good timing. Departs around 1pm AKL time (don't have to get up early, not dark.. arrives SYD around 4pm (good for them too, avoids rush hour traffic) and arrives in BKK around 10.30pm same day (just in time to get a good nights sleep (or go out on the town ;D)

Actually Thai is cutting service to MEL. From June 3, 12 weekly flight will become 11.

By the way TG992, is your msn down? cause I hardly see you show up since Easter  Smile

An early morning or even a late night service would have been the obvious choice, giving pax a choice of this or a daily afternoon departure. Also, this would have given pax more connections within Asia.
As it is, I take it most pax are just transitting Bangkok en route to Europe ( there probably aren't any departures for within Asia around 11pm), thats why these flights get in to BKK late.

Yes, TG992 arrival at around 10.30PM is about right. Most if not all THAI's Europe flights leave between midnight and 1AM.

I think you'll find it is so they connect with the through flights to Europe....AKLs infrastructure is pushed to its limits because of all the Asian Airlines doeing this at exactly the same time....

Actually guys on Thai's shedules that has changed!

TG983 BKK-BNE STA 1200 M11
TG984 BNE-BKK STD 1945 M11

The flight is now due in BKK at 0500 the following day! I'm not sure why this has changed but I guess it's due to the arrival time in BKK!

I really hoped that I would get to see the M11 take off in daylight so hopefully next summer will see a change.  Smile

Similar with SQ - they have 2 daily evening flights at LHR for SIN departing within 40 minutes.

I guess its about getting available slots?

Sorry Jim I meant to mention that.
At least I will still be able to see it arrive in daylight hours!
