The MD11 flight is routed via Brisbane, a new service and the 744 flight is the existing flight via SYD. It was my understanding that frequency would be cut back on the flight via SYD to allow more service to MEL.
I agree, this is odd, and something tells me that the schedule is not correct.

It's indeed correct.. TG will not be cutting back on their TG991 service via SYD - they go out every day packed to the gills.
I guess they've determined that this slot is the best for pax in AKL, SYD, BNE, and BKK.
I've taken the TG992 flight many times, and it is good timing. Departs around 1pm AKL time (don't have to get up early, not dark.. arrives SYD around 4pm (good for them too, avoids rush hour traffic) and arrives in BKK around 10.30pm same day (just in time to get a good nights sleep (or go out on the town ;D)

An early morning or even a late night service would have been the obvious choice, giving pax a choice of this or a daily afternoon departure. Also, this would have given pax more connections within Asia.
As it is, I take it most pax are just transitting Bangkok en route to Europe ( there probably aren't any departures for within Asia around 11pm), thats why these flights get in to BKK late.
