Are you talking in terms of outside or inside?

717 is pretty quiet - inside & out. BAe146s & Avro RJs aren't that quiet inside - not super noisy, but nothing great.

Cheers,

Justin

or I'm deaf, either one.

B757 is also whispery quiet.

The quietest jet? One that is not running, of course!

Seriously, some COEx ERJ's are quiet, and so is the 328JET on normal take-off. Doing an STOL take-off, that little bugger is quite loud, and quite smoky, too!

It's the BAe 146/Avro RJ series. They are the quietest from the outside but not the inside. I believe the quietest from the inside is indeed the 717.

The BAe 146/Avro RJ series is nicknamed "The Whisper Jet" because it is so quiet. When a 737 or any other jet takes-off and then a BAe 146/Avro RJ takes off right after. You can really tell the huge difference between them.

NW's CRJ's are really quiet. ANd the A319/A320 family is pretty noisless.
737NG's are quiet also.

757 isn't that quiet, thats what makes it fun though.

As for choppers, the Notar520 is rated the quietest in its class. I think Eurocopters or Bells follow.

the A320 is quiet up close but they are one of the most noteable noise makers 5000 feet over my head ..

I think the A340, 737-700, 800, 900, and the 717. I can only see those planes take off (about 1 to 2 miles away) and can't hear them. The Aloha 737s usually make the most noise!!!  Big thumbs up

Not hearing an aircraft taking off from a distance has alot to do with prevailing winds and the outside air temperature.

If the wind is blowing strong enough away from you, that would give the impression of less sound.

I musy say the 777 is a very quiet jet. I expected a big roar when i took off on 777, but there was barely a whisper. Nice

Air Canada might fly A340's to HNL

I would have to say the 717 or Avro/Bae 146/MD90 from the outide. I agree with High_flyr69 the A320 family isnt that quiet from the outside, they make a wierd noise on approach and takeoff, if you know aircraft you know its one of those.

It is a widely known fact that the Canadair Regional Jet is THE quietest jet in the world today.

I have flown in the following aircraft (for comparison purposes):

Boeing
717
727
737- first two generations
757
767

Douglas
DC-9-30
MD-80
DC-10
MD-11

Fokker 100

Airbus
A300
A320, 319
A330

The quietest from the INSIDE is HANDS DOWN the 717 and A330.

I heard an MD-90 go over today and was really surprised at how quiet it was. The 717 is so quite when flying over that I frequently don't notice it until it has passed, and I look up and can SEE it.

The 330 was a very quiet ride, all the way from Philly to Phiumicino.

The 757 is also quiet.

I recently sat in the bulkhead row of an AA MD-82 and was surprised how quiet it is up front. I usually sit in the very back, and it's the difference between night and day on those looooooong S80.

25 Post contains images RayChuang : The fact the BR715 is such a quiet engine is all the more reason why AA ought to seriously look at installing an uprated version of this engine (along
26 Yow : It's gotta be the CRJ. Bombardier claims it to be the world's quietest jet, and having flown on it, I would have to agree with them.
27 BA : It's a known fact that the BAe 146/Avro RJ is the quietest jet aircraft in the world, followed by the CRJ. It beats the CRJ by a few decibels. Regards
28 TWAMD-80 : The Boeing 717 if not the quietest is up there among the quietest. Another quiet jet is the ERJ 145. TWA MD80
