United's Customers Benefit as the Airline Continues to Improve Operational Performance

For Immediate Release

CHICAGO, April 2, 2002 – United Airlines (NYSE: UAL) today congratulated its employees after it was announced the airline has vaulted over many of its major competitors in several key areas in the most recent U.S. Department of Transportation Air Travel Consumer Report.

In the DOT's February report on the performance of the 10 biggest airlines, United posted some of its best results in years, particularly in on-time arrival, mishandled bags and number of flights cancelled.

For the month of February, 86.4 percent of United's flights arrived within the DOT's 14 minute window, the highest number since October 1994, when 90 percent of the airline's flights arrived on time. United's February mishandled bag rate of 3.2 per 1,000 North America customers was the lowest the company has had in 15 years.

"We are extremely proud of the hard work our employees have put in to improve United's operations. Their efforts are producing great performance and outstanding service," said Andy Studdert, United's executive vice president and chief operating officer. "In the last 12 months, United has consistently improved year-over-year, and now we're showing the industry and our customers that we are committed to being the best that we can be."

United also placed third in the rankings for fewest cancellations. Out of over 42,000 flights scheduled in February, United cancelled only 248 flights, or 0.6 percent of its operation.

United Airlines offers about 1,700 flights a day on a route network that spans the globe. News releases and other information about United Airlines can be found at the company’s website, www.united.com.

Excelent news for United. United also reported a rise in its load factor by 4.5 points to 77.5%.

Actually, right now all airlines across the board are posting their best ever on-time rate and completion rates. This is a combination of a significantly reduced flight schedules, less congested air space and ground ops, reduced aircraft utilization, and a generally mild winter over much on the U.S.

Hey BA,

This is off topic, but I just wanted to thank you for the article that you shared on March 6 about Denver spending twenty million to replace its passenger-loading bridges. I'm using the info for a paper that I am writing and it is helping me out a lot!!  Big grin I just wanted to thank you for the good info and for the interesting post. Keep us informed on what's going on in good ol' DIA. It is possible that I'll be flying on Frontier this summer to Sac-town. Sure will be nice to try out one of those new -19's. Thanks again Big grin

Salute,
UA
