The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) on Thursday gave United Airlines the go-ahead to form an alliance with British Midland Airways Ltd.

Sorry, but I am trying to do some revision.

This is nothing spectacular. It all depends on the US/UK open skies agreement. No open skies = no BA/AA, UA/BMI alliances.

Arsenal- umm.. what are you talking about? UA/BMI have an alliance now.. they have anti trustimmunity... they dont need a open skies agreement to have it... only BA/AA needs it.

No they don't have anti-trust immunity, yet. The order is contingent upon the US/UK concluding an open skies agreement. Which means nothing has/will change until an open skies agreement is reached with the UK. And since the expectation is that the UK, as an individual entity (along with all other EU countries), will shortly lose the right to negotiate their own open skies agreement with the US, the value of this order is questionable.

So does this mean that BMI can codeshare on United's flights out of Heathrow to the US? I don't know why they don't do that already. Continental codeshares on Virgin's Heathrow-USA flights. Makes sense, no?

If I understand the current situation correctly, they can file to codeshare, but it would have to be approved by both governments. If/when open skies is achieved, then they could codeshare at will, as their anti-trust immunity would then be in force.

Yeah, i got the BMI/UA thing wrong, but the alliance in question now is the AA/BA one.
