AC's Mainline A/c Seating Plans Changing?

Is Air Canada reconfiguring seating in its mainline aircraft to put in fewer business class seats, or maybe eliminate J Class altogether in certain aircraft?

What got me wondering is this: I have an AC flight booked for YEG-YVR return on April 18, returning on April 22. The seating assignments for me were as follows: 3A YEG-YVR, on a 732, and 25F, returning on an A319. The surprise was the "3A" part - this is normally a business class seat on AC's 737-200s! And no, my dad did not request a J-class seat in booking me on the best round trip fare the airline came up with. (about $225CDN)

I had phoned the airline to confirm that my flights were indeed confirmed (I couldn't get a hold of my dad at the time - typical of him), and that's when I found out the seating assingment. I decided against asking any more questions and accepted it - what's wrong with a Y-class seat? I sure as hell wouldn't complain if it were the case!! Big grin But after I got my itinerary/receipt in the mail a couple of weeks later saying the same seats, it did dawn on me that either one of three things happened:

1. The agent made a typo error (I kinda doubt that, or then again, may be that's what happened-! If that's true, then I'll likely be reassigned to a different seat - in economy class.)

2. AC is already reducing the number of business class seats in its aircraft, particularly narrowbodies like the 732 and the A319. (Actually would not be surprising, since airlines often do that in the face of tougher times ahead) And that may mean the seat could well be a bulkhead one, which I certainly don't mind at all.

3. AC is eliminating J-class altogether seating on some mainline a/c. (strange when it's already done that with Tango!)

Please keep in mind that AC Tango doesn't even fly the YEG-YVR route, nor is there anything about Tango flying that rout anytime soon.

If this reconfiguring thing is true, what might the typical seating configurations be in its mainline aircraft?

Well some 737-200's are moving to the Tango fleet, so maybe this aircraft is configured with all economy seats, but is still operating some mainline flights. The new Tango 737's probably aren't needed until a little later after your flight. It could be the reverse of what happened when Tango first started up with business class seats on some of the planes.

Tango having business class seats? I've forgotten they did just that!

I do, however, remember very vaguely about AC cutting back on business class seats on routes like the YVR-YYC-YEG triangle.

I haven't flown AC since May 2001, so things could've changed quite a bit with AC within the last year, and especially since 9/11, as we all know. So maybe you're right, Spyderz, but I'll have to see it to believe it.

Yeah, you're more than likely flying on a Tango plane. This morning (Sunday), AC245 arrived YEG-YVR using a Tango 737.

Thanks, Allee.

Interesting. And yet Tango doesn't normally fly this route. But still, I'm not surprised anymore - I think this is a cost-cutting measure. It's probably faster and maybe cheaper for them to just use a Tango plane available than wait while the plane sits in maintenance having its biz class seats taken out. I guess that's what I'll be going on. I don't have any real problems with that, for after all, it gets me to YVR and I get to collect FFPs.

AC is actually removing J class and replacing them with Y class seats in an effort to reduce costs and add capacity to the aircraft, as more people are flying economy vs business class these days. They are removing 1 row of J in their A319/320 and adding 2 rows of Y. I beleive they also did this with their B767-200, although I am not aware of the specific details. Their Int'l fleet is not effected - B767-300, A330/340, B747.

There has been rumours of all Y B737 flying rapidair flights out west...not sure if they are Tango assigned aircraft or aircraft being prepared for the new Low Cost Carrier.
