Yes, May 2nd 2002 will be the 50th anniversary of the jet age in commercial aviation history. There is an article in Airways about that, I just finished reading it. The very first jet airliner was the British built De Havilland Comet. It first flew in 1949 but entered service in 1952 on a direct flight from London to Johannesburg with multiple intermediate stops at African cities including Kharthoum and Entebbe.
It says in the article that on May 2nd this should happen: Heathwrow should close the main runway for a couple of minutes. That will mark the tribute to the beginning of the jet age, one half century of civilian jet operations already! The runway will be painted with a speedbird logo exaclty where the first Comet took off when in service with BOAC (now British Airways). If you live in London, you may have heard something about celebrating the 50th anniversary of jet age in air travel.
