WOW, whats suprises me much more is the thing with the news that on 04 July 2002 all Jet Operates will move from SZB to KUL...

Well I think the decision to move all jet operations was a good one - as the new fast rail connection should smooth and reduce city transfer times. In fact SZB should be closed to all cargo and commercial traffic as this would consolidate airlines and aircraft movements into KUL.

I was in KL two weeks ago and I think that KL Sentral is a bit out of the way. You still have to cab into the REAL centre of KL which is Bukit Bintang or KLCC.

It costs RM35 for the train. However, a cab costs RM60. If there are more than one of us, it's faster to take a cab.

Granted, a cab takes about 45 minutes in smooth traffic from Bukit Bintang to KLIA. (In heavy traffic it took me about 55 mins weeks ago, in the rain and all that)

Say I stay in the Marriot Hotel at Bukit Bintang. I'll have to wait for a cab to come, get on the cab and take about 15 minutes to get to KL Sentral, where I'll lug my bags to the concourse for check-in etc. Then board the train and get to KLIA in over an hour. If there are 4 of us together, it'll cost a whopping RM 140! Whereas a cab would cost RM60. One could argue that one has to pay more to save the time needed to get to KLIA. But considering the detour one has to make to Sentral, does one really save all that much time?

I'd rather just get on a cab and whiz off to the airport and save myself the hassle of transferring to the train in KL Sentral, which is not as "sentral" as one might expect it to be! Hong Kong's airport express leaves from Kowloon Tong which is in the centre of EVERYTHING! That's the difference between the HK and KL systems.

The Singapore train takes about 30 mins to reach the airport from the city. Granted it's not an express train, but it costs more than 10 times less to take the train here than in KL. (I know that it's not really a fair comparison but the price differential is enormous!)

Just my humble observation from a tourist who regularly visits Kuala Lumpur.

I agree with Docpepz that KL Sentral is not exactly located in downtown Kuala Lumpur. However, there are LRT (Metro, subway, MRT, tube whatever you call it!) services that run from KL Sentral to KLCC which will take you there within minutes. I agree that Bukit Bintang is a bit far off to reach, but then, there will be LRT services in the future, I think either in 2003 or 2004 linking KL Sentral to Bukit Bintang area. Actually, if you really want to go to downtown, you could well take the LRT to Masjid Jamek station or to the KLCC station. Bukit Bintang is merely a shopping paradise, not really much of a business district.

By the way, if you want to blame on the bad roads in Kuala Lumpur, blame it on someone who planned it years ago who did not planned it with straight roads, but instead with roads that are curving here and there. I like the way that most American cities are planned where it's easy to navigate around!

The KLIA Express people are planning to come up with more tariffs available to the public. They are seeing how things are going first in the first month of operations.

Oh by the way, the KLIA Express is actually targeting single travelers and not families. That's why the put their fares at 35 MYR (about 10 USD). It's actually cheaper to travel by rail then by a taxi if you are a single traveler. I would say that by international standards, it's really cheap considering the distance between the two terminals. The Heathrow Express charges 13 pounds (18 USD) for a shorter journey, though they have got more flexible fares. And you have to think that the train services in Singapore Changi is not a dedicated air-rail link. It's merely an extension of your MRT system. This explains why it's cheaper. In London, if you take the tube from Heathrow to downtown London, it would cost you around 3 pounds, but the amount of time you spend on the train is dreadful. It takes you like 45 minutes just to get to say Piccadilly Circus or Leicester Square and that's you don't need to change any trains at all. If Singapore have a dedicated air-rail link like Malaysia does, I believe that it's going to be more expensive than Malaysia's!

And I forgot to mention that they actually provides a shuttle bus service to major hotels around downtown Kuala Lumpur from KL Sentral, just like the ones in Hong Kong. So, you can actually take the shuttle and forget about taking a cab from Bukit Bintang. If I am not mistaken, the shuttle bus is free.
